For people who sent activity lists

Did you make it look just like the common app? I'm a bit worried about mine, I feel that it's far too extensive. I did the math and figured out that I accounted for 32.5% of my time in high school on it . . . clubs, volunteer activities, travel, sports, band, other music groups, family, work, pastimes . . . everything . . . I also included lenghty descriptions of each activity, all 28 of them . . . .

Anybody do the same?

wow.... 28.... i just used the common app format and in the last box listed my awards and/or position for each activity (7 in total i believe). how many pages is yours'? I'd say they wouldn't want to look at more than 2 (a cornell adcom said they only wanted one...)

oh wow, 4 pages for me. EC's have been the the biggest chunk of my high school life, however. Hopefully they won't just ignore it or be terribly annoyed by it or something.....

I had a three page sheet. I wouldn't worry too much about it. They know that you want them to see everything you've done.

yeh what pre1321 said...my resume (including honors, work experience, and summer programs) came out to 7 pages.

I listed my main activities on the common app, but if harvard wants to hear more about a particular activity, they can go through the resume...in the end, if they don't like it, they won't read it...it won't hurt you though.

SEVEN pages?

i put my ECs on two pages, and had another page for honors and stuff.

i really am having a hard time imagining all of what you could put on seven pages.

I'm not expecting anyone to read the whole thing, but if, while flipping through it, an admissions officer sees something interesting, i've provided him with more information about that particular activity...my philosophy: give them everything, let them decide what they want...

I had a 2-page bragsheet in the format of those in "Rock Hard Apps." I didn't have nearly as many ec's as you, but I did go into detail... (I got in EA.)

I don't think it should hurt you, as long as all the EC's are quality.

congrats on getting into harvard!

i just sent out my app yesterday, and now i'm feeling anxiety surges. ugggh, i'll have to wait until april, and realistically, it may just be a long shot for me.

like modestmouse, I got in EA and I did very much the same thing resume-wise...I just submitted a 2 page resume that listed all of my activities, lesser included (positions held, years, etc)...then honors...then a separate section for sports...then a section highlighting what I did after EVERY summer of h.s. ...not just the last 2.

I just had a 3 page activity sheet in the Ivywise format. No I did not hire a private counselor I just bout the 8 dollar book. Why spend thousands of dollards when 8 dollars will ge tu the same info

omg
you all have so many ECs! i only had enough to fill in the one given in the common app...will this hurt me?

if you highlighted your most significant activities, you ought to be fine.

yeah, i read the ivywise rock hard apps book too. but i didn't use their format. i used the chart format in "A is for Admission."

alyssa09: You'll be fine, as long as your ECs are quality. 28 (or 7 pages, like the other guy) seems a bit excessive. I got in, and my resume was 1-page, and my activities all fit on the common app form.

I put my activity list in the common app formaqt, and it turned out to be three pages. I did include hobbies and summer activities though.

I just included an explanation/description for my common app activities (cos some of them are pretty weird). The whole point of the activity sheet is to show your passion. how can you be passionate about something when you have a 2 page resume?

You have to be passionate concisely.

I got in. I didn't send any EC stuff (other than what's on the common app). I did bring a short (2 page) resume for my interview. I'm not saying this is the best way, only that you don't need to be excessive to get in.

modestmouse,

how far did u go in explanation? Is it just a one sentence explanation or did you get into a lot of detail? I also used the brag sheet format in the rock hard apps...

last question, for those of you who had successful applications, did you list the EC are most related to your major first on the 7 spaces on the common app?

thx!

Do list your main activities on the common app. This gives the adcom an easy reference. I sent in a resume, about 2 pages, about just the two activites i cared about most (debate and drama) cuz i spend all of my waking hours with them. I didnt feel like going into detail about clubs and such, because they arent my priority. I like the idea of listing what you did during your summers! I didnt think of that :(
