Hello,
So I'm still a rather indecisive about college choice and was hoping you guys could help provide some information solely on the premed aspect of these schools. While I don't know where I will end up, so far I do want to try to get into med school.

If possible, for either one of the schools (Tufts, Emory, University of Rochester, Vanderbilt) could you give a little info on the following aspects?

Research and other opportunities:
General Difficulty:
Competitiveness with other students:
Teachers:
Premed advising:
Grading curve (Deflation etc.)
Other info:

I know this is quite a bit but I really appreciate any help you guys can give. Thanks so much!

Thanks for replying! and I have been accepted to these schools Another consideration would be BC but so far the vibe of it doesnt really seem to fit me. As for cost, the only difference is that URoch would be 15k less per year.

Research and other opportunities: CDC right next door, Whitehead research on campus, tons of research positions for students/ work studies
General Difficulty: moderate
Competitiveness with other students:not cut throat, cooperative study groups, but not easy either
Teachers: nearly all classes are taught by profs, except some lab sections
Premed advising: easily accessible, pretty friendly
Grading curve (Deflation etc.) harder classes have curves depending on performance of the whole class
Other info:

At Emory, do advisers pressure people who aren’t at the top to drop out in order to maintain a high med school admit rate? And when you say the harder classes have curves do you mean they curve down or up?

Sinopa, have you asked on the med school boards, and also posted on the Tufts and Emory boards to see how pre-meds at those schools feel about the programs? Find out for both schools how many students they send each year to med schools, and what their percentage rate is for getting into med school out of Emory or Tufts.

I suspect that the feel of both schools is going to be similar as far as research opportunities, non-cutthroatedness, advising and the rest.

My freshman D at Tufts isn’t a pre-med but is a STEM major and mentions repeatedly examples of people working together.

Say what? Sorry m2ck, not what I’ve generally seen mentioned on forums–people usually praise the school for friendly attitude. I’ve got a D there and she’s always confirmed that it’s a friendly place.

UofRochester!!! But you have already made your decision. Hospital across the river, friendly and cooperative student body and loaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaads of possibilities to do research. And its cheaper too! Save that money for med-school. The Cluster type of structure really lets you take the classes you want instead of a core. And I believe (although I could be wrong) that there is slight more inflation at Rochester for GPA than at Tufts. And cold is good… Snow!

Glad your D finds it to be a friendly place. :)

My nephew, a rising junior, has complained about the lack of friendliness - outside of his team - since the day he got there. He’s only stayed because of his sport.

He’s a Calif kid, so maybe his expectations were different?
