Regional accreditation does not seem to be that high a standard, even if it is the highest available accreditation standard for the school (as opposed to a specific degree program).
University of Phoenix, DeVry University, and Kaplan University do have regional accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission (formerly North Central Association of Colleges and Schools).
Some, but not all, of the defunct Corinthian colleges had regional accreditation.
Bob Jones University was a for-profit university without regional accreditation before 2017; it gained both non-profit status and regional accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges in 2017.
DigiPen Institute of Technology does not have regional accreditation.
Right—like i said, regional accreditation is a pretty low bar for entry.
It isn’t sufficient, but it certainly is necessary.
(And, yes, there are a very few special cases—but they’re the exceptions that prove the rule, in the actual definition of the phrase. In order to show they’re something real without accreditation, they have to show extra evidence.)
Business majors appear to be the largest group of majors at the University of Phoenix. However, University of Phoenix business majors do not have AACSB accreditation.
Academic freedom depends not only on political liberty but also on financial support for activities that are not clearly profitable. The best colleges and universities support low-demand majors and arcane research projects. The University of Phoenix covers only 9 career-focused fields of study. If you already have a career and your employer is paying for courses in one of those fields, fine. Otherwise, you’re likely to get a much richer learning experience at a well-established, non-profit residential college or university.
