Stanford's website says that the teacher recs "should" come from teachers in two different subject areas from the following: English; Math; Science; Foreign Lang.; History/Social Sciences. My S has lined up his Physics and Comp Sci teachers for Recs. My question is, is Computer Science considered math or science? Obviously if it's considered Science then he has 2 from the same subject area. I called the undergrad admissions office today and the person who answered said it depended on the HS and how they considered the subject, as part of math or science. Hmmm....S would really like to use these 2 as he's had them both several years and they know him. He could get a previous history teacher, but it might not be as good. Should he check with his GC or just proceed with these 2? Thanks.

I don't think it'd matter that much, to be honest. If they are the two who can best highlight his strengths (which I assume are science), then that should be fine. Math and science are highly intertwined, anyway, so you wouldn't be getting much diversity in recommendations by making sure one is math and one is science.

I had two from language teachers (English and Spanish), and it was fine. Stanford isn't too strict on recommendations.

Okay, great--thanks very much. Yes, those are his strengths, along with Math, but he really hasn't clicked with a math teacher since 9th grade, while he has with these 2. As an aside, but on a similar topic, I was surprised to see that one of MIT's recs has to be from a Humanities teacher. So he's re-grouping for that one. Thanks again.

I am reminded of a conversation my S had with someone who asked if CS was a science or an art. His answer: "It's magic." :)

Computer Science is indeed definitely a Math.

Okay, good, thanks.
