For the minorities at Princeton

I was recently accepted, and was very close to binding, but I became a bit worried after reading many things online about the lack of integration between different races on campus, specifically african americans, hispanic, etc. I just wanted to hear from minority students, how have your experiences been? Have you found yourself becoming friends with a variety of backgrounds, or only minorities, or only you particular minority? Are people open to Blacks/Hispanics that are willing to push themselves out of the "minority bubble"? Any comments would be greatly appreciated! :D

I am not a minority - nor a college student - but it is actually quite customary for those of specific races to resegregate themselves. It is inherent in our psychology to naturally seek those from the same cultural, economic, and social backgrounds.

bumping glitterzisgold’s question

“Are people open to Blacks/Hispanics that are willing to push themselves out of the “minority bubble”?”

People (I’m guessing you mean white people) are ABSOLUTELY open to blacks/Hispanics who are willing to push themselves out of the “minority bubble,” but you do need to make sure that you are, in fact, putting yourself out there, and not just during the first two weeks of freshman year. Since so many minority students self-segregate to varying degrees (and this is not a problem that is unique to Princeton), oftentimes white students assume that you’re more interested in spending time with other kids of your own ethnicity than with a set of kids that is roughly representative of the student body’s racial composition.
