For the off campus experienced: Furniture

Hey guys, moving into Colony Club (i have heard such horrible things... i know :(* However, my question lies with furniture.

Mostly just a bed/mattress. I am not worried about a desk as i wouldn't mind a desk off craigslist. I would just like to know if anyone has any good places in mind that aren't overly expensive for bedding (preferably a platform bed) around town. I am looking for a full size, as queen would probably be too big. I decided to go with unfurnished, because i couldn't fathom the extra 800+ in a year's worth of rent.

Thank you!

I suggest a new, inexpensive mattress - not a used one. Bed frames are cheap and can be found at the Salvation Army, Goodwill, or from friends. Ditto a used table and chairs.

Clean any used furniture well before you bring it into your apartment.

American Freight Furniture on west Tharpe towards Walmart. New stuff. Cheap. Great for first apartments. They have mattresses and frames. Not sure about platform frames. You could get the mattress there and look for a platform on Craigslist. They have locations all over. D1 has purchased from the Tallahassee location and D2 from a south Florida location. We purchased a full mattress and box springs set recently. They have all of the sets set up so you can lie down and try them. You can buy just the mattress or the box spring or the set.

And where it lists “sets” on the website, every piece is priced separately at the store. You do not need to buy a bedroom set.

Whatever you do, don’t buy a crappy $39 dollar low end “leader” mattress unless you want to get stabbed with a loose wire spring popping through it–you’ll need to pop for a few more bucks to get a sleepable mattress. I don’t think you can buy used mattresses from too many stores, including Goodwill and Salvation Army, because of health reasons, but you can get used frames and other furniture from stores like P2N’s suggested.

We paid $199 for a great mattress with a pillowtop, a name brand that retailed at other stores for $500. There were also good ones for $149.

I was looking at American Freight, however some of these online reviews have me a tad skeptical. I’ve only got experience with Rooms2Go (the warehouse near Tampa since my rents live in Orlando), however i was glued towards the prices that American Freight offer. Sunny, how long have your D’s had their products?

Also, did you get delivery? Not looking for outrageous delivery charges or i may just rent a UHAUL

D got a futon and a dresser from them. They are a good year old. The Futon was leather, $199 and the exact was was seen elsewhere for $399. It is going to be a keeper. The dresser I have not seen yet. Those two items were $35 delivery charge.

D2 has a mattress that she loves. It is nicer than the one she has at home. We got the box spings and a metal bed frame. She also got a metal bar height table with glass top and two stools for eating on. It has not been a problem and looks great. She got lamps, one floor lamp and 2 table lamps that are working just fine. She got a cheap dresser. It was cheap in price, it looks cheep, but the drawers all work and it was black and functional. Of all the pieces, only the dresser was cheap in price and cheaply made. The rest are good pieces for a great price. She also got a sectional that is VERY COMFORTABLE, cushions are holding up well, it was only $599 and looks like its a $1099 sectional. D1 was jealous. D2’s delivery charge was $85 or 89 but it was a lot of stuff.
