For the parents

There are 4 dates coming up you should begin planning for. The first is Orientation. If you plan on attending an Orientation session pick a date now and make arrangements. The hotels and airlines will book fast. Nothing as frustrating as seeing a $69 plane ticket be $189 the next day because you waited.

Second if you plan on attend I-day the same rules apply. You maybe welcome, and you may not. Should be your Cadet’s choice, but we wouldn’t have missed it for the world.

Third will be Acceptance Day in mid August. You won’t get much time, but it will be an exciting event. Getting to see your Cadet in the parade, and later getting their boards pinned on.

Finally Parents Weekend. This will be a biggie, but expect your Cadet to sleep through most of it. It will be a long over due chance to leave the Academy, and have some real food. You can see some Falcon Football, and maybe watch your Cadet do a few push-ups

Plan now and make arrangements early it will pay-off in the end.

We did all of these...first kid to fly the coop and all. Parent's weekend is a must...I thought orientation was also very important, and wife and I just wanted to be there for I-day.

During orientation plan head to the Chapel wall to watch Noon Meal Formation, on Monday I believe. It was the first time we saw one.

A lot of families stay in Colorado Springs for Parent's weekend though we opted to get out of town after the football game to spend Saturday and Sunday night in the mountains.

I remember that NMF. It's funny how differently you look at it once you're actually part of the formation. :)

And even better when you just hang out near the formations! :) (EMT duties rock).

Keep in mind that PW is the same weekend the Democratic Convention is happening in Denver, get stuff early!

And during BCT-1 and BCT-2...keep those letters coming to your Basic. We gave out about 50 pre-addressed and stamped envelopes at his h.s. graduation party and asked guests to try to send him something over the summer.

Hornet is right to remind you of the DNC overlap with Parent's Weekend.

DNC is Aug 25-28 and PW starts Friday the 28th. Yes, all the Dems should be in Denver but if you are traveling through Denver consider the crowds and the airline schedules. I don't know how many people associated with the DNC will want to come to COS but just be sure to get all your reservations for hotel and flights early.
