To all those who got onto the computer science program at Cal, congrats! You have a very bright future that lies ahead of you. hat's off...hands down... to you all!!!

Fasttrack

Cal's PA score is something like 4.8 or on par with Yale and Caltech. (HSPM all have 4.9) UCLA's PA score is something like 4.3(?). I think that's a huge difference right there. The PA score is what determines/measures the prestige level of the university. Therefore, Cal is more prestigious than UCLA and the gap isn't even close.

UCLA, Math, Love the school.

Sure LA has a lot of attractions and what not, but I've really had my fill of the LA culture after 13 years. When you've lived in LA for 13 years, you realize it's a fast-paced city where people are focused on becoming wealthy and glamorous as quickly as possible. There's nothing wrong with that, but its a tiring lifestyle. Oh, and on top of that, you need a car to get everywhere so if you don't have a car you're basically stranded.

Both of my brothers go to UCLA; neither knows how to drive.

Should add: If you're a conservative afraid of getting lynched in Berkeley, you'll be happy to know that John Yoo is still alive and well.

I don't know about PA score, but I was referring to the rankings provided by US News and World Report, and also QS World Rankings.
Where did you get your information from? I'm interested in seeing the PA scores of other universities as well. I tried googling PA score, but it came up with nothing.

It is one of the columns of the USN&WR rankings - it is the peer rankings - what other universities think of the college. The other factors may be important in some ways, such as ranking on average class size, selectivity or endowment funding, but I agree with RML that the peer rankings are the insiders pick.

go bearsssss

^^, bruins are bears, you fail.

i fail .

bruins are baby bears, though. =P

I'm in the same position. I still am waiting to hear back from the ivy's and other east coast schools (probably not going to get in to any of those, though). I was thought i'd fit in at Berkeley better, but now UCLA seems more enticing. HELP!

going to cal for engineering (eecs), since cal is 2nd in the nation in undergrad engineering (1st is MIT, 2nd is a tie between stanford and cal). ucla doesn't even make the top 10

Once you visit them both you should be able to decide

eh, Bruins are actually brown bears.

Got into both. I FAR prefer Cal.

Don't lie. Nationally and throughout the world, Cal has the prestige over UCLA. Is it statistically, quantitatively significant? Maybe not as much as it seems. But Cal has the prestige.

Berkeley is fascinating. But the issue with Berkeley is that it's not "in your face" as LA is. You walk out, and there's stuff to do in LA. It's advertised. It's blatant. It's flamboyant.

The only thing flamboyant in Berkeley is its plethora of alternative lifestyles.

The city of Berkeley is all about being underground. The city of LA - not so much. The culture of Berkeley is going against the norm, against the "man", against the system. The culture of LA - not so much.

Berkeley culture is about being different. It's about exposing parts of yourself that you've been socially constructed to oppress - both figuratively and literally. It's quirky. It's fun. It's chill. It's oftentimes elusive. But it's there, and it's fascinating. I love Berkeley - both the school and the city.

Most likely UCB over UCLA for chemistry.

Waiting on other schools, but Berkeley for EECS.

In terms of campus life and environment, I would say you have to visit them both to get a sense. I personally enjoy LA's nightlife and nearby attractions more than Berkeley's "underground" culture and San Francisco, but it all depends on your opinion and personality.

Here are some campus videos to get you a sense of what the campus/social climate looks like, but they are NOT substitutes for not visiting the campus, because if you haven't - you need to visit them!

Umm..hard to say......

LA....

its just more...pretty. in my opinion.

but it is a hard choice :/

By definition bruins are brown bears, but by tradition here at UCLA, it's known as baby bears.
