I just wanted to talk to other people who are applying to Thacher.
Maybe we can discuss why we decided to apply there, the application process, how much you want to go if you got in, and other things, but in general just keep each other sane for the next couple of months before the final decision (this could also eventually serve as a M10 freakout thread for Thacher)!
Current students and others who applied in years before, or those plan to do so in the future are welcome as well.
I’m applying to only Thacher for ninth grade boarding. I’m in love with this school!

I was hoping that someone other than a parent would chime in. I’m so glad you are applying. It is every bit as wonderful as you think it is. Imagine playing soccer overlooking a mountain valley while your friends and teachers cheer you on from horseback. The kids adore each other and are incredibly supportive. The admistration works hard to ensure that you aren’t overwhelmed with the academic load and teachers are always there for you.
I know that you know that it is very difficult to get into and that they have a very good read on the types of kids who will thrive there. It’s not for everyone. It’s structured and the community standards that you are expected to live up to are a real thing. But, the education is first rate and the experience you will have will make you into a better version of yourself.
Good luck and I hope it works out for you!
Hi @Kthor626 ! Yep, I’ve fallen head over heels in love with Thacher. But, of course, I know there’s a teeny tiny chance I will actually get in.
I really admire the emphasis on the outdoors (I’m a very nature-oriented kind of person) and the close-knit family-type thing going on between everyone there. And the riding program seems awesome too. I’m pretty convinced I would really really enjoy it if I went.
Really now I’m just hoping for the best and preparing for the worst! I’ll put my results on here on M10… It’s incredibly nerve wracking.
Good luck magicthecat and Kthor626! I’m a parent (sorry) but we fell in love with Thacher last year. You’re not going to find a lot @ Thacher on cc- more geared to the east coast prep schools.
Thacher is a one of a kind place- my DD was accepted last year- it was frankly more shocking than all of her other acceptances, given we live in the south, needed significant aide and she’s not an athlete! Don’t give up hope. She was torn until the official signing dating- (she’s @ SPS)
What we loved: schools ethos, unique campus ( “camp Thacher” is what we called it), the horse program, camping trips, friendly “atypical” high school environment, outdoor assemblies, amazing dorms, great dance program, oh and the weather! Best of luck. Did you let them know that it was your first choice? This is a school where it might matter- they hand pick a very small freshmen class for its vibe so they really want those accepted. Fingers crossed that you get that orange and green package in the mail
Wow, thanks for all this @copperboom ! I don’t think words can describe how much I LOVE and admire Thacher! I think one could safely say I’m obsessed (I even bought a history book about the school). What do you think was the deciding factor in your daughter’s acceptance (awesome, by the way!!)? I, too, will need some aide.
Yes, I definitely told them they’re my top choice. Also, I’m only applying to Thacher, nowhere else (I can stay at my current school if I don’t get in). I made sure I told my interviewer what I really admire about Thacher during my interview and then sent them a thank-you note after saying that I really enjoyed my tour, was amazed by the campus, and am very interested in their school and would have no doubts about going if I got in.
Thanks again for your reply! I’m crossing my fingers.
Any current applicants out there?
Has anyone heard from Thacher yet?
Nope. I’m in Cali and no post mail from them yet. I just can’t stand the agony of waiting! :-SS
I actually only applied to Thacher too! The school is so amazing and I love the outdoors/riding program! It’s been my dream to go there since I was 8. Hopefully that dream doesn’t get crushed in the next few days. :-S
GL to you!
@magicthecat @LiveRunLaugh I wish you both good luck tomorrow! For now, however, you have a “dangerous” attitude, which is that you seem to fall madly in love with a school that hasn’t admitted you. Thatcher is a very small school. On top of its low admit rate, according to its website last year it had an impressive 77% yield rate, which means at least 550+ out of its 650+ applicants will not be admitted. I would certainly not bet my luck on it.
Yep, I think we’re both very much expecting a rejection. Even for students who are well-qualified for the school, there is zero guarantee to get in. @panpacific
