Hey all,
I just had a question about housing at UC Davis.
So Im going to have a student apartment at UC Davis called the Lexington and I will be sharing it with 2 others.
Im not sure if its just Davis or this particular apartment but ITS FREAKIN EXPENSIVE!!!

I cut my meal plan because the rent is pretty expensive ( good idea?).

But I just had a question, is UC housing this expensive?
im paying about 3.3k over 84 months so thats about $1100 per month. I think it comes with utilities but im not sure about internet.

I have a friend over at a state school and he's paying about 700 per month. Another friend is paying $1000 a month(state) but he has the whole apartment to himself!!

Student housing is generally much more expensive than market rates. I don’t know how much independent apartments in Davis go for but in Sacramento you can get a decent apartment for $300-600/bedroom.

Student housing for some places is more expensive than renting an apartment nearby. My brother is attending UCSB and this is the case. He decided to opt to stay in the student houses instead of renting an apartment because he didn’t know anyone that would be willing to rent an apartment with him. Renting an apartment was the cheaper option.

If you signed a lease at the Lexington or any other apartments that are part of SHA as an off-campus apartment and NOT through Student Housing, then it would be cheaper, because then you could split the cost of rent with your roommates (for example, last year, the price of The Drake, part of SHA, was around $1400. Well, through Student Housing, it’s triple that amount, especially if you get a meal plan). When you are living in the apartments that are part of the Student Housing Apartments program and paying through Student Housing, each person pays about $2000+ (without a meal plan) or $4000+ (with a meal plan) and rent CANNOT be split between the residents.

Hey all,
So next quarter - it would probably be a good idea to try to find a non “student housing” apartment then?

Also, can anyone confirm if canceling my meal plan was a good idea or not? its $1.3k a quarter and I think I can eat less than that for 3 months.

You can stay with the Lexington if you want, but sign their regular lease, not the lease through student housing. All apartments that are part of Student Housing Apartments also have regular leases, since not all residents living in apartments that also act as SHAs are students. And when you look for another apartment, you’ll have to look for one for the next school year. When you signed a contract with Student Housing for the SHAs, it’s for the entire school year. You can’t cancel your contract unless you get permission to from Student Housing, and they would want a really good reason for you to want to cancel the contract.

You’ll be fine if you cancelled your meal plan. You have your own kitchen in your apartment, so might as well use it.

Hi sopranokitty,
thanks for the really informataive reply!

and another quick question for you guys,
you know what USHIP insurance requirement? if I have either a entering UG scholarship or Cal grant A, will one of those cover the requirement?

Hey guys!,
Thanks so much so far for being helpful.
I just had another question:

An above poster said that housing contracts cannot be canceled.
I did some research on this and I think it is only for residence halls.( they have like an appeal process).
I have an apartment and here is what the site says:
“Following the cancellation of a student’s housing contract, a credit for the remaining (prorated) fees will be posted to the student’s UC Davis account. For students who elected to have a meal plan …(and it goes on)…”

I think this means that sometime in the future, I will be able to cancel a contract.

EDIT: nevermind. I dont think I can cancel.
When I get there Im gonna ask if there is any way I can get out of it.
$1.1k a month with no meal plan is too much
