So, finally I submitted by deposit to Tulane today. So anyone who was admitted to GW and has chosen not to attend post here and PLEASE explain why GW was not the best fit for you. Personally, for me my reasons were:
-not enough recruiting on GW's part; i felt like they just expected me to come
-cost/ doubt that i would get 3.7 for future scholarships
-cultural- GW is DOMINATED by students from the northeast and entirely by the east coast (ie New York, Jersey, Jersey...)...i would say that GW is still overcoming being a regional school
-school seemed less personal, and more business than tulane.
-competitve atmosphere that seemed like overkill at the undergraduate level
-doubts that my 200K invested in GW would be worth it
CYA later GWU, maybe graduate school or better yet Georgetown. I'm going to REALLY REALLY miss the prospect of living in DC next year. Its such a freakin awesome city.

Only reason--cost. I love GW, and will try to transfer in or at least attend for graduate school. I found everyone at the school very helpful and I met a lot of awesome students. Oh well...

I'm in the same situation as alk125. I love/loved GW, but got no F. aid. and can't afford 53k a year. I'm going to AU, with money, and am planning on going to GW for grad school, so I know I'll be a colonial one day!

armcap -- good luck at tulane; you'll love the school, Tulane is awesome.
the rest of y'all -- definitely consider transferring in! gw is awesome with transfer credits / flexibility

Yeah, I'm probably not going. GW is ridiculously expensive- why?? That's what I want to know. It's a good school and all, but so is Georgetown, and that's in the same city, and does not cost as much! What's up with that?

It's all because of the Fix Tuition Plan, which builds in the increases a lot of students will face over your four years. Like my sister at Tufts, whose tuition is rising faster than we ever expected. Let alone GW's endowment is growing quickly, but still is too small for a university of it's size. For those who said they did not give any or enough financial aid, did you try appealing or at least contacting GW Financial Aid?

202-994-6620 - While I may seem repetitive at stating this, I have not heard many kids trying to work with GW at this.

Thanks...my dad called them but without much luck. I'm going to call them soon to talk about my options as a transfer. I think I just didn't rank high enough among those admitted to get significantly more aid.

Well I am happy you both tried or will try and I am ultimately saddened that you can't attend, but I understand how extremely pricey GW is as an institution. I do hope we can welcome you at some other point!

Good luck with all of your future endeavors!

so alk125 and ironjawedangel where are you planning on attending????state schools?

I also really wanted to go to gdub and especially because I wanted to live in DC so badly. I could have gone to american because they gave me $$ but I'm going to university of rochester since its a better school. It was a hard choice though, and I'm a bit torn up about having to give up GW for financial reasons. Oh well, theres always georgetown for grad school.

I got into UC Davis, UC San Diego and UCLA, but after visiting, and though UCLA is a great school, I decided that being in DC is most important to me (and I hate Southern CA), so I'm going to American (with alittle more money). I also tried to renegotiate something with the F. Aid office, but it didn't work and we couldn't get anymore money. Oh well, I know I'll be in DC at least!

I only visited once in Septenber and liked it enought to apply, and I got in with a generous financial Aid package and scholarship money, but I just like the other schools I got into more. Washington and Lee or BC are my two choices now. BC and GWU are probably about on par socially (academics, while important, aren't the sole factor in my descion), but W&L where I'm leaning on going is so much friendlier, more close knit, and seems to offer a more personal undergraduate experiance. I'm upset I'll miss out on the chance to go to school in DC, esp since I'll prb major in poly sci, but I like the philosophy of small for ugrad, big for grad school. Maybe I'll end up at GW later. Who knows, but its just not for me now.

I'm going to a state school...still grappling over which one. I'm trying to go into it not having the attitude I'm going to transfer, but it's difficult. Haha this is exactly the situation I did not want to be in.

Only reason i'm not attending is because the NROTC unit at GW is full and I was unable to transfer my scholarship. I will be attending Tulane, my very close second choice, and i'm just as excited. I know there will be days when i'm in business classes at TU daydreaming about the Eliot School, but I think i'll have a great time at Tulane and in New Orleans regardless.

updates - any last minute decisions from people not deciding to go?????

After applying to GW as a safety and getting rejected from my "top five choices" I began to look at George Washington more closely. However, after narrowing my "short list" to GW, Trinity (CT), or Rhodes (TN) I actually decided to pick Rhodes.

While Rhodes has virtually no reputation above the Mason-Dixon line, I decided that it was the best fit for me. Princeton-Review couldn't say enough about it as well. It rightfully earned the #7 Most Beautiful Campus, as well as the awards for Happiest Students and Best Professors and Dorms Like Palaces. I know that guidebooks aren't everything, but they affirmed what I obsered after visiting over 30 schools across the country. The feel of the campus and the kindness of the students really drew me in. I felt a genuine care from the faculty and administration. I didn't feel like I was trying to be sold, rather, they presented the truth.

My brother was an '05 graduate of GWU, and practically begged me not to go there. He simply felt, that above all else, the education recieved at GW is not worth the added expense of living in DC. So, finally, after setting aside all of my snobby reservations about reputation and location, I decided Rhodes would benefit me more in the long run. I really feel like there is no justification of paying 52k to go to GW when you're not getting an education such as that at an Ivy League, or in my case, Rhodes. My parents fully supported my attending GW and were more than willing to pay the tuition. Personally though, it didn't feel right.

It was a hard decision, but for me, I feel that it was definatly the right one to make.

Yeah I really like George Washington but 52k is fixed, and im going to be in the class of 2011 if I get in, so I imagine it could go up a bit?

I think ill have to work hard to maintain 3.7s which of course is going to add a TON of stress to me since right now I'm not that studious (trying to become more studious) but just one of those fairly successful slackers.

We sent in the deposit for Washington and Lee a couple of days ago. Despite the great location of GW, there were too many negatives, dorms, class size, lack of cafeteria etc.

George Washington has amazing dorms.. Thurston is a bit ****ty but the rest of them are amazing, i agree on the cafeteria, but i can get over that my main concern is actually just the cost

Because I was accepted to Georgetown. The people at Georgetown have a cruel, but entertaining joke about GW and American kids.

Whats the common factor between the students at American University and those at George Washington University? They were both rejected from Georgetown University. :)

Kind of mean but I got a small laugh out of it. George Washington is an amazing school with a limitless amount of opportunities and I personally would like to congratulate anyone who was offered a place there.

So I guess the only reason that i turned down GW was because I was accepted to Georgetown which, in my opinion, looks more prestigous on a resume.

Good luck to you all!!
