Oh, I see. I was under the impression that you can only take 1 suitcase. Since you can take 2 suitcases (each 50 lbs or less), that's really alot of clothes and stuff you can fit. Also, do you think it would work if you brought 1 small duffle back on the plane (that counts as your carry on) and 1 backback that counts as your personal item?

KING - first of all - check with the airlines that you are flying with - luggage weights and number of bags can actually vary - so 2 suitcases should be allowed. As far as carry on - a back-pack - with computer IN IT - which you will have to take out to get thru security - and 1 other small personnal bag is usualy allowed. FYI - extra luggage will be charged - and can be pretty expensive. (for the gals - you may find that your purse is included as the small carry on - so good idea to put INSIDE back-pack - to make it one bag - then you can have a carry on plus the back pack)

Shipping by UPS (or someother carrier) is very simple - for UPS - pack the stuff up - make sure to use lots of that clear packing tape too - go to the UPS web site and set up an account (they deduct the charges from a checking account or credit card) measure the boxes and get the weight also - make your labels on your computer - print them out - slap them on the box (cover with clear tape to keep them from ripping) - take to STAPLES (or other UPS drop site) - drop them off - and they will be there - at school - waiting for you. Having the account all set up lets you (or your family) ship things back and forth quite easily. This also gives you an idea of what day they will be delivered as well. When we do this - we ship stuff needed immediately usually 4 days prior - and then send a second shipment a few days later of stuff that can wait a few days - helps in getting settled.

We do this all the time - almost every semester - very easy and painless to do. HAHA when my son graduated from college - we actually shipped ALL of his stuff home - 13 boxes - $230 - could not have done it any cheaper.

Another GREAT idea is to pack stuff in the SPACE BAGS - the ones you suck the air out of - takes up ALOT less space - the bags fold up and store in the closet til needed again.

Summer storage - if not available on campus - we rent a unit - 5x5 (actually holds alot - but not alot of furniture) - for about $30 - $40 a month - discounted for students. Kiddo only brings home what is really needed for the summer and then moves back in August. Makes things pretty easy to manage.

I'd recommend the bring your max luggage on the airplane (2 suitcases+carryons), and buy other things as you need it. People that drive in with all sorts of stuff usually end up with cluttered dorm rooms...I've always had plenty of space.

I'm going from Georgia to Brandeis University in Massachusetts and I have a suitcase that could hold a toddler. I'm bringing that plus a duffle for when I travel back and forth from home. Then I'm hitting up the tax free NH shopping to get anything else I need. My cousin lives 5 minutes away and my grandfather has an empty basement and 2nd story less than an hour away that are all mine for storage or rent free living. I won't have a car though, which makes it a bit more difficult.

If you make friends from around the area, maybe you could store stuff with them if they have spare room in a closet or basement.
