I went into the undergraduate admission office at Cal today to ask about them. The lady was very informative and simply said that they are not used in the admission criteria, and all that it shows is that under some circumstance, the student had to drop the course. The lady seemed very knowledgeable and answered many questions, so hopefully this would ease some of you who are worried about W's....like I was. :)

Thanks for the heads up UCBlove.

ucblove, how about the W in the last semester? did u ask them?

sorry I didn’t as them about W’s from the last semester, but I’m sure she’ll say the same…you would most likely have to notify them, but if it isn’t a prerequisite for your major or a course used to satisfy igetc, then I’m sure it’s fine.

Thanks so much! [:

Lol it’s so true. I’ve amassed 6 W’s at my CC and I still have gotten into the UCs I wanted. Granted, my extracurriculars are outstanding and my essays were amazing.

GPA: 3.4
Accepted: UCSD (Tag), UCSC, UCSB (Tag), Davis
Pending: Irvine (Tap), UCLA, Cal
ECs: Student Body President, State-wide work
Major: Business Economics where available, Econ everywhere else

^ Irvine offers TAP? Since when?

BeardY:
Pilot year, beginning school year 09-10. There were only about 20 (dont quote me on this figure) or something CCC involved in the TAP program. Not only does it guarantee admittance to UCI, but also to UCI’s Campus Wide Honors program.

BEARDY

My bad. I meant to say UCLA (Tag).

bluearrowil, can i read your essays?

ya sure, on its way.

cool, thanks.
interested in my comments?

bluearrowil, would you mind sending me your essays also? I’m in the midst of waiting for UCLA and CAL with a couple of other schools.

W’s shouldn’t matter much as long as there are not a multitude of W’s in a single subject that can harm you later when it comes to grad school admissions.

Do W’s need to be explained in the application?

if its only one, then you shouldn’t focus on it, but if its a pattern then you should consider having a reasonable explanation for the pattern
