Zaph - pale pastel pink would be pretty for a girl's room. If you keep the walls solid you could let the little ones select (or ask their opinions) for sheets and blankets. It would be great to take them to Build-A-Bear Workshop if you've never done that - then they could have special stuffed animals for their room.

My little ones have a requested an under-the-sea theme.

Smart girls! Made their poppa proud! :D

So...... The walls are 99% patched. Tomorrow I finish patching, install the new closet light, and start priming. Should be ready for decorating by the end of the weekend. :)

I'm such a sucker! I spoil them, but hey, I only see them a few days a month, so the heck with it!

I'm just excited for it all to begin and like all of you, for these weeks of nervousnss and anticipation to end. Trying to do regular exercise while regularly having fun. Good Luck and I'll see all you guys up there.
How seriously are you all taking memorizing Reef Points info?

Hey you soon to be plebes
I was at a scholarship event yesterday and a dad with a son who was a plebe a few years back informed me that his son, who was a track and field runner in high school, BROKE his leg in plebe summer....it was shin splints that continued to fracture. He finished plebe summer on crutches.

So please, please, please
RUN
RUN
RUN
sensibly now and do all those feet and lower leg exercises to strenghten your leg muscles!

Wow. That must have hurt like the dickens....

I will memorize reef points when I get there. Not a good idea to make yourself standout as a know it all or a diggit.

Yep. You kids PLEASE keep on, keeping on with the training. I know has to be hard with people pulling at you taking up your time cause they know you're leaving soon. Feel like gumby yet with all that pulling? But try try to keep it up. Make time each day to train. DON'T go overboard & get injured. At USMMA last year (& this won't pertain to USNA but....) there were several kids on crutches who could not take their oath at the swearing in ceremony. They were injured during Indoc and they had to be completely healed before being sworn in. It was so sad to see. Stay safe but have some kind of crazy fun these last few days!

P.S. Zap. Under-the-sea! Perfect! How sweet you are. How bout a puppy? LOL

Dude, if you can, memorize it now.

Trust me.

You don't have to go out of your way, but if you CAN, do it.

Jamzmom, how does one get injured during Indoc? Is that the first day the plebes show up on campus - or is swearing in after plebe summer?

For the reef points deal, I'm just going to memorize what they told us to memorize (chain of command, first three general orders of a sentry, and mission of the USNA). Other than that, I'm just going to memorize it when I get there.

I got a copy from my BGO, but I've only read enough to recognize the basic information. I'm not going to memorizeit, to much work for the lazy state I seem to be in now, just get farmiliar with it.

I still remember everything from last summer, so that should help.

Zaph, I see your point of view: plebe summer will be that much less stressful and hectic if we have at least some info. memorized going into the summer.

However, I feel as if memorizing some of reef points beforehand is almost cheating - cheating yourself of the qualities you gain by working under pressure and somewhat diminishes the whole purpose that usna is trying to achieve. I would assume it's one of those things that you loathe while you're doing it but appreciate when looking back on it.

I definitely haven't been there and done that so I'd like to hear your thoughts on this.

I think one is simply being prepared by memorizing going in... seems like I won't be prepared... although I might remember some table salts just because they're fun.

Zaphod: under the sea...love it! don't forget to paint the ceiling aqua and add in some "bubbles," the bottom hull of a boat, and dangle a fishing line with a few colorful fish from some ceiling hooks! I can see it now.....sea grass, tropical fish, treasure chest, star fish and sea shells! They will LOVE IT!!! Good for you!!!

The ceiling will be a light blue sky with (if I can figure it out) clouds. At night, glow-in-the-dark constellations.

They're going to freak! :D

BS. Preparation isn't cheating. What you're suggesting is akin to saying that you shouldn't run any before Plebe Summer so that you can get the full experience USNA is trying to teach you. Doesn't make much sense, now does it?

IF YOU CAN, study and memorize all you can (just make sure it's accurate). Just don't waste ALL your time at home doing it. Balance in all things.

Zaphod:

I'm not sure how great of an artist or improvist you are, but you could buy sponges in the shape of clouds or a nice sponge that will give a cloud effect, like a sea sponge. They work pretty nice for cloud effects.

Is it going to look anything like this?

I have always wanted to decorate a stage set or paint an entire room and decorate it to a theme, but I live in a house where the walls are old and are the type that cannot be painted.

Sealion, keep in mind that I am only talking about USMMA Indoc. Indoc for USMMA is basically the same thing as USNA Plebe Summer. USMMA kids are not sworn in until Sept. so they have been there more than two months before they are sworn in. Plenty of opportunity to be injured.

Uh....... I'm decorating my daughters' room, not a whorehouse.

Geez, THAT is what I call a THEME, boy!

Well, trying to get everyone into the act: quizes on midspeak and skuttlebutt at dinner, who can remember general orders of a sentry, hows the cow, what time is it....sir......the thorpedo goes along providing I sing the "goat" song everynight- how embarrasing! But he does get a kick out of it! Anyway, we call it "Skuttlebutt Bingo" and the loser gets to do the dishes! ;) (betcha can't guess who makes up the questions!!! :) )

JM- can't imagine going through a whole plebe summer only to get injured and not be able to take the oath with the rest of the class- must be tough! I remember seeing one or 2 plebes in almost every squad (??? platoon???)....last August on the yard- marching at the back of the group on their crutches no less- so at USMMA, if they are injured and unable to take the oath, what then? Are they sent home?

Z...clouds are easy...paint sky first, then use an almost-dry brush for white paint....scruff on in random patches....feather outside edges out using sponge or scrunched-up rag....will look great!!! Then send us all pics!
