For those on the waiting list FYI

Harvard Admissions says there are 700 of us. According to the wait list letter, about two-thirds will choose to remain on it, so maybe about 467 active canidates. Certaintly not great odds but it could be worse.

Thanks for the info

thanks for the info - may I ask where it came from though?

haha, sdong, either we're going to be best friends or best enemies at the end of this waitlisting ordeal, I keep seeing you on these threads.

Seriously, give me some verification source for this statistic please!

and BTW, juniorinhs, wouldn't it be "worst" enemies, not "best" enemies. LOL :)

I called admissions and that is what the guy told me.

Sorry Stud, I guess I wasn't thinking. Sometimes my post-midnight ideas can get incoherent.

Thanks eventer.

If one thinks of this optimistically, they said they could take anywhere from 0 to 100. If I recall correctly, one recent year, they took 81. If they were to take, say, 70, this year, that's a 10% chance.
Even at 35, it's a 5% chance, and if we were crazy enough to have almost made it with that 5.5% RD rate... now we get a second chance (or at least that's what I keep telling myself =P )

on one of the other threads, it said that alot of legacies were put on the wait list as a consolation, and that those kids were probably going to be rejected in the end. so i guess we have slightly better odds now....

but i also heard that they took like 5 kids last year....

@ juniorinhs - we shall simply have to wait and see won't we ;)

Great to hear that odds aren't quite as slim as I feared, like I've already said though, making plans elsewhere (UPenn), though I did make sure to get that post card off ASAP.

heh, I'm having soo much trouble "making plans elsewhere". agh, conflict of interests!
I know I should. Regular Decision, I had thought, oh, I should be lucky enough to get in to at least one of the 6 schools that I actually want to go to....and look where that's gotten me- 4 waitlists and 2 rejections and a bunch of schools that I had never taken seriously. So any normal person would've just faced the fact that they would have to be happy elsewhere.
But being on 4 waitlists makes me more hopeful than I should be and I haven't been able to think seriously about the other places yet.
Rawrgh.

P.S. You can totally call up the admissions offices and ask about the number of people on the waitlist. Yale's is published somewhere as 859. I called Stanford today, and the very nice guy I spoke to was all ready to tell me but couldn't find the statistic among all the sheets of paper on his desk and had to give me an estimate of "a few hundred" instead.

sunny, they took 12 kids last year. Definitely not reassuring, but it's twice as much as 5? lol

My GC explained to me about the legacy-consolation factor, and seemed to think that in the end the waitlist would come down to about 50 or so qualified applicants that Harvard is serious about, a small factor (12 last year) of which would be admitted.

ok, so if they take 12 kids again, and there are 467 candidates, we have a 2.6% chance.

yay.

I want my lottery ticket! (the provincial lottery is getting up there.... :D ;) )

On the thread "I will turn down Harvard for________" there seemed to be quite a few lucky applicants who were planning on saying no to Harvard for other schools. I didn't count but I was surprised.

yeah, i'm following that thread too. Only problem is that a lot of people picked Stanford (another school that I'm waitlisted at.) but I'd rather Harvard > Stanford, so I guess I'm going to keep encouraging that.

yea... you have been quite "encouraging" haven't you, course I am waitlisted and both schools as well... suppose you win some you lose some

"My GC explained to me about the legacy-consolation factor, and seemed to think that in the end the waitlist would come down to about 50 or so qualified applicants that Harvard is serious about, a small factor (12 last year) of which would be admitted."

50 seems rather small for a pool of a few hundred waitlisted. i was waitlisted from 4 schools also (Harvard included). don't know if i should put up any hope.

My understanding is that the majority of WL candidates accepted are "Z List" ones, the majority of whom are legacies.

Don't worry guys. Though I can't say I sympathize (yet), don't forget to send supplements those of you who haven't. It could be your ticket in ;)

what are supplements?
