female, RD admit 06

SAT I: 740V, 690M
SAT II: 790 writing, 790 biology, 740 math IIc (I think...? the memory's a bit fuzzy after almost 4 years)

I found my high school vitae on an old floppy disk the other day... sort of amusing.

Heaven knows I can't see any reason MIT liked it -- although I guess adding up the number of hours I dedicated to band, choir, and theatre probably clued the adcom in that I enjoy all-nighters... ;) I guess I must have written about biology in my essays, because I was a voracious reader from way back, but I don't really remember.

Hey park5378, at the risk of getting bashed for referring you to another thread, here's a link to a thread listing stats of many applicants (accepted, rejected, waitlisted) who applied for class of '09.

Hope that helps.

Been working for the past year 25+ hrs/wk at used bookstore

Very involved in math stuff since middle school. Now I do all the major fundraising for math team as Mu Alpha Theta president (second year), lead my team in competitions with some state-level finishes (though not in a while), asst coach/mentor a local (very successful) MATHCOUNTS team, volunteer math tutoring, keep stats for varsity volleyball team in the fall, etc.

Cycling, mostly for fitness since there are no juniors teams/competitions in my area. I bike 50-100 miles a week usually, depending on the weather.

A few other miscellaneous honor clubs memberships but nothing very interesting (Beta, NHS, Science club)

I think it's clear where my passion is.

could someone explain me, what's the difference between minorities, and majorities?
i'm sort of new to the country he-he
oh, yeah
whom do you consider a majority, and whom do you consider a minority and why?
thaaaanks :)

a. don't hijack the thread, yo.
b. the majority is whichever group there's most of. this requires that you specify both the region you're discussing (majority at MIT? your hs? your state? the country?) and what divisions you're interested in (ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, etc.)
c. usual usage is ethnicity/racial, of which the census says that the US is majority Caucasian; the second largest population is African-American. you can find hard numbers on the census.gov site.
d. an important thing to note around here is that at MIT, applicants of Asian descent aren't considered "under-represented minorities", b/c they are over-represented in the student body proportional to their national population.
e. don't hijack the thread. everyone else, keep posting stats.

sorry, sorry-my bad
won't happen again lol
thanks though

Some school awards, district/regional awards (for ac-dec science and stuff), national awards for robotics

Yeah passion is really important. My "difficulty" essay was about dealing with boys... they make all girls' lives difficult... but it's hardly ever a bad thing.

Does MIT care if you take 20 APs as opposed to 5?

I think they compare it to the number of AP classes offered. If your school offers 30 AP classes and you've only taken 5... it looks bad. If your school only offers 5 and you've taken all five, then that's excellent.

male - RD admit '09 (applied EA)

My school offers 9 APs, and I took 14. That probably impressed them. Also, after I was deferred, I sent in my ISEF research abstract and a copy of one of my maps. I'm not sure how good those things actually were, but they showed my passion.

The best advice I can give is to show what you're most passionate about. For me, that's math/science and maps/history. Don't try to seem passionate about something you think they want you to be passionate about.

My "difficulty" essay was about dealing with boys... they make all girls' lives difficult... but it's hardly ever a bad thing.
um, speak for yourself.
people make my life difficult. especially me.
