for those who are in Freshman Science Honors, can we take advanced chem fall semester and advanced bio the next, or do we have to take them at the same time? And for those who are in Thematic Option, are we taking Core 102 during the fall? I went on the website to choose my classes, and even though I couldn't register for them, I was able to "schedule" them to see if they would fit. I was just playing around with the schedule and putting down the classes I would like to take, and so far I put:

Math-125
Chem-115 (advanced chem)
Core-111 (Thematic Option Writing)
French-220
Core-102

Does that resemble anyone's current schedule?

CATennisPlayer: i believe they say that most fsh people take chem and bio together, but it's possible to take them separately if you really want to. it's just that chem (i think?) is then pushed to the next year, since it's only offered during one semester, which then also delays all the chem classes that follow (ochem, biochem, etc.) the sample fsh schedule they gave us is: chem 115, bio 121, social issues GE, writing

I think I can pull off a pretty high GPA with my current schedule (depending on how hard/easy chem and GE is going to be):

MATH 226 - Calc III (expecting near A)
HIST 200 - The American Experience (expecting A-ish)
ENGR 102 - engr frosh academy
CHEM 105 - hoping this is easy; i heard it all depends on teacher
AME 101 - Intro to mech eng.

How do we get department approval to take bio121? I took both ap chem and ap bio in high school and got As in both and 5s on the tests. I emailed the bio department to ask. I'd rather take advanced general bio and chem because the professors sound a lot better and I've already taken both ap courses.

I'd like to drop PHIL115 and ANTH201 to take bio and chem. I'm premed but majoring in international relations. Since I can't take any international relations courses first semester, I want to take some of my pre-med requirements.

You'll have to be in FSH. The director's email is on this site (http://www.usc.edu/dept/LAS/general_studies/) so I guess shoot off an email asking what the dealy is about BISC 121.

usually when it came to departmental authorization, i just called them directly, but it may be different from school to school within USC...

I just sent the director of FSH an email, so hopefully I'll hear back soon. I may call the bio department tomorrow too. Thanks for the responses. I appreciate it.

cowtipper1: i don't mean to get you down or anything, but while i was at orientation, the fsh advisor said that the program is actually over-filled this year, so you might not be able to do fsh :\ just a heads-up. i think you can choose to petition into the honors classes, though, without being in the program.

I actually just reconfigured my schedule with the non-advanced general bio class, and I like it better. My main concern with the non-advanced general bio was that the professors for that class all got HORRIBLE reviews. Oh well... I took ap bio, so hopefully that will help.

jlchen1031, I remember hearing that a while back. Thank you for reminding me. I think I'm just gonna stick to the normal bio. That chem class takes up soooo much time per week.

OK.. well.. My schedule is completely different now that I'm taking bio, so here's my new class list:

WRIT140
REL140g: Religion and Ethical Issues
BISC120g: General Biology: Organismal Biology and Evolution
EALC350g: Chinese Civilization
PED139a: Volleyball (should be fun... I've played club for 7 years)

for you and the others in PHIL 115 with Lewis, i took it my first semester, and it was awesome. granted, it's awesome if 1) you can pay attention in lecture and take good notes, and 2) you don't mind thinking a little. if you can do those two things, it's an easy A.

the material was interesting from the outset...even with science now, some of the pre-Socratic explanations for nature are relevant and make you think like crazy. later on, the class could get confusing, but just ask questions and again, pay attention...he goes over things more than once and in different ways. Lewis is a really nice guy, a bit on the corny side as far as jokes, but intelligent and sincere. you practically can't get anything out of readings by yourself, so it's best just to go to lecture, then read what little you need to. i ended up reading just a small fraction of what was assigned (which was very little). the papers were short (i think two or three 2-pages, and one 4-page with an outline counting as a "page"). that's not to say they were easy...they made you think. but the final was a one page take home. some of this may change, but he seemed pretty set in how he approached the class. seriously...great class, easy A...can't get much better.

EDIT: actually, i just checked Senate Course Guide, and almost everyone is saying the same...so i ain't lyin'! haha.

hey for those of you who went already, am i screwed if i do my pre-orientation homework the day before orientation?

No... Not at all. I did it the day before orientation. They don't quiz you on it. lol... Just be sure to get the placement tests done, otherwise you'll have to take them at orientation.

ok sweet that makes me feel a lot better...i just finished mine and i'm going tomorrow
