FOR THOSE who have been accepted to St Andrews, Trinity, and Royal Holloway

Hello, I am junior in high school, I am posting this thread for any AMERICANS who have been accepted too or have already attended and graduated from these three schools. I guess my question would be, what are the standards fo americans gpa, sat etc wise? I've heard from multiple sources that GPA doesnt really count for UK schools because they do not trust American grading systems therefore meaning that your SAT score is most important, I have also heard it is more lenient for Americans to get into these colleges than somebody who say is native to Britain or the British Isles. I am thinking of majoring in law with a minor in history or a major in english with a minor in law. Let me know! Thanks!

Travel:

My son is a freshman at St Andrews.

(By the way, I have never heard of Royal Holloway).

We too had heard that in the UK, they basically go by SAT scores, and scores on your AP exams.

They don’t care that much about ECs.

I believe that all this is indeed true.

It is further my understanding that it is easier for an American to get into St Andrews for an American, because we pay full freight. Supposedly, Americans only need a 1900 SAT score to get into St Andrews, and some “5” grades on AP tests in his or her intended field of study.

My son had a very high SAT, and a number of “5” grades on AP exams, so we were pretty sure he would get in.

My son was waitlisted at a number of top schools like Vanderbilt, Emory, and Johns Hopkins, but got into St Andrews.

Hope this helps.

Hi, thank you so much for taking time out to respond to my post! I have not taken the SAT’s yet but I will be doing so in March. If you do not mind me asking, what was your sons SAT score?

Very high.

2300.

But such a high score is not necessary to get into St Andrews.

I would say 2000 or 2100.

But definitely at least 1900.

Plus some good AP exam scores.

If you get high SAT scores, but don’t have much in the way of ECs, then I think applying to schools in the UK is a good idea, because they go much more by SAT scores there, and much less on ECs. (my son did not have much in the way of ECs)

You would then be playing in a game where the rules favor you.

I had suggested Trinity to my son as well, but for some reason, he didn’t apply there.

It is my understanding that you can apply to five schools in the UK with one application, so I would pick 5 if I were you.

He also got into Warwick.

He did not apply to Edinburgh, but I would check that one out too.

There is already a thread for St Andrews on college confidential.

It contains literally years of comments about the school.

I would check that out.
