Kevin101,
What is your major?? exact same as mine?

it sounds like berkeley is really hard on your gpa. would anyone recommend UCLA because it will higher your chances on getting into a good grad school? do they take into account how hard berkeley is on say, your law school application? i'm leaning towards berkeley because they are my number one choice for law school and i want to make a few connections. what do you guys think?

I know for a fact that UCB and UCLA graduate schools discriminate against their own students, because they encourage their students to be exposed to different schools of thought while pursuing their higher learning.

"How many of you are undecided because of Berkeley's superior academic reputation? "

Exactly why I'm considering UCB.

"it sounds like berkeley is really hard on your gpa. would anyone recommend UCLA because it will higher your chances on getting into a good grad school?"

Exactly why I am considering UCLA. Though most engineering jobs don't require more than a BS, I still want to leave the doors open just in case.

But in terms of college experience and area, I'm looking at UCSD. I won't have to study as hard for a 3.0+ gpa (hopefully) and I will use the free time to workout and do internships (year-round if possible). And I plan on frequenting San Diego Zoo a lot. :) I was initially going to pursue zoology but I went with electrical engineering.

your argement is quite reasonable..

have you decided yet haybaxt?

Are you sure they actually discriminate against their own students? I thought the admission percentage was low just because so many of their own students apply.

ee_stu, I am still not fully convinced that UCLA is better for me, my hearth with UCLA, but my inner voice telling me to go to UCB

Wow. I just checked financial aid and I get a full ride at UCB - grants and work study, no loans! Though I am only a spring admit and can't take full advantage of the Cal Bear Scholarship. I'll have to call to find out if the scholarship is renewable. This will definitely change things...Does anyone know offhand whether Cal Bear is renewable?

With UCLA, I have to borrow 6.8k in loans per year. I'm waiting for UCSD info. I applied as living off-campus at all 3 UC.

haybaxt, if you haven't visited both then it's as simple as going to visit them.

I've specifically been told that they STRONGLY encourage their undergraduates to pursue their higher learning elsewhere for the sake of acquiring different perspectives and whatnot, which is why they "discriminate" against their own students. They might think their school of thought is the best, but they still want them to broaden their horizon.

Can you find a document that says they actually do that?

No...it's not something I read. It's what a counselor from Boalt and UCLA's School of Law told me.

you guys i got the cal and ucla packets on the same day... it was such a beautiful moment. but i must say... ucla's packet is bit more impressive :)

Yeah, for CAL: Math/Applied Science
For UCLA: Math/Applied Science but alternative major is exact with yours: Math/Econs.
I also got in USC as an Electrical Engineering Major (USC engineering is #9 in the nation and I attended the open house there too... i love their programs very much eve more than UCLA math department but the only bad thing is the high cost)

Yeah, I agree with you on that and that is why i'm leaning to UCLA, I almost submitted the SIR but before clicking the SUBMIT button, I rethink about UCB and USC so anyways, i'm taking a break from thinking about this for may be days and then I will make my final decision.

Bokchoi, so you think I have a much better shot at getting into Boalt if I attend UCLA? I hear UCLA's classes are not as intense(better GPA), and from what you've said, Boalt leans more toward UCLA students than Berkeleys.

Though if i DID go to UCLA, and didn't make it into Boalt later on, I'd forgo my chance to ever study at Berkeley. Tough choices... Anyone got any opinions?

"Boalt leans more toward UCLA students than Berkeleys."

What is far, far more important than UCLA or Berkeley is YOUR GPA AND LSAT! This has been mentioned many times.

Well my GPA and LSAT are going to be as high as I possibly can get them, regardless of the school I choose. I just don't want my application for Boalt to get thrown out of the pile because I went to Berkeley and they "want me to experience new academic environments". I suppose there is always Harvard Law....

I wouldn't think like that guitarshark; look at the stats. Many Cal grads go to Boalt.

Guess what? In two days I have the cutest Cal t-shirt coming from the online bookstore..

Can't wait to wear it to school so everyone can be green with envy. :)
