For those who were DEFERRED then ACCEPTED to RD

I'm wondering for those out there who were deferred then accepted to RD, how were your stats? (SAT, GPA, ECs) and also, what other stuff did you send in (besides the required mid-year reports)?

The fact that no one has applied yet is quite ominous

I have seen a couple people here on the past that were deferred and subsequently accepted. Your best bet is probably to search old threads or hope someone replies to this one.

Even I'm curious.. not about what all to send in, I've got a fair idea in my head and gonna put it into action soon.. but when do you send in stuff now? Before the RD deadline?
and is there really much chance left?

10% which is pretty close to the RD admit rate

Actually, the admit rate for deferred ED applicants this past year was 14%.

From the Class of 2011 statistics page on the Penn web site:

Total Deferred In December
1,476 (37%)

Deferred Applicants Admitted In April
202 (14%)

Penn: Undergraduate Admissions: Statistics for the Class of 2011

i was deferred last year, and then admitted in march, much to my surprise. i'm at penn right now, and i love it.

the funny thing is, after i was deferred, i moved on from penn, and honestly did not entertain the notion of being accepted in the spring. i focused on some other schools that i liked, such as cornell and georgetown, and didn't give penn another thought.
after most people were deferred, it seemed as if they clung to that shred of hope that they would be accepted in the spring. there was a boy in these forums who was still deadset on penn, from december to march, but wound up not being accepted and was crushed.

so one piece of advice i can give to you is to move on for the time being. i know your deferral stings a bit right now, and certainly mine did too. but penn isn't the one and only school at which you can be happy and enjoy your college experience, and that's the truth.
it's also true that just because you weren't accepted to penn early decision, you won't be accepted to another very elite/ivy league school regular decision... i knew someone who was rejected from penn early decision last year, and then accepted to cornell and duke regular decision.
obviously college admissions are really erratic... a friend of mine applied early to brown, was deferred and then rejected, but accepted regular decision to penn... and even myself - although i eventually got into penn regular decision, i was waitlisted at cornell and georgetown, two schools that aren't quite as highly regarded as penn, and have higher acceptance rates as well.
so admissions are certainly very random... but you should try not to sweat it too much, and for now, work on getting those other applications ready.

to respond to the original poster, regarding my stats and what i sent in to penn after my deferral...

i had a 96.5% grade average at a private school on long island... i was ranked 13/372 (top 3%) in my class... i scored a 2330 sat score (740 cr, 790 m, 800 w), and my sat ii scores were 740 (math level 1) and 690 (biology-e)... i'm a white, catholic male, middle-upper class family... i think my essays were good, as i've always enjoyed writing... in terms of my main activities, i was a feature editor for my schools' paper, captain of the mathlete team, president of the spanish club, volunteer coach at a football clinic... i don't wanna make this sound like some sort of resume, so i'll stop there. suffice to say, i pursued the things that i enjoyed most, and hopefully that's what most of you have done as well.

regarding things that i sent in to penn after my deferral...
i didn't send one of those 'continued interest' letters that i had noticed some applicants in these forums sent in... i'm sure it wouldn't hurt though.
i did send in a letter that mentioned several awards/honors i had received between the time i applied (late october) and january, when i sent the letter. i believe it helped, because it showed that i was still interested in penn for sending them information about myself, and that i wasn't slacking off senior year, because i had still received some noteworthy distinctions since the application deadline.

let me conclude by saying that i wish all of you deferees luck for the future, whether that be at penn or another great school. i hope my post helped a bit, especially because i know how you all feel, and how desperately you wanted penn. trust that things will work out.

thanks so much for your input withonevoice. I think you are right (I sent in my Columbia app yesterday)

Do you think they will release the ED class of 2012 stats soon? Maybe I can call them?

Seeing how Princeton and now Harvard and maybe even Yale (Yale will announce in spring) all have reduced tuitions, hopefully more strong applicants will be drawn away from Penn.

Those stats will be disclosed in an article in the Daily Pennsylvanian, probably when classes resume in January.

thanks. When will we be notified of these stats? shouldn't they also go on the website?

The won't appear on the web site until shortly before classes begin in Fall 2008, along with the rest of the stats for the Class of 2012.

does anybody know if penn puts deferred people on waitlist or if they only accept/reject deferrees? because i was just curious and thinking wow...if they waitlisted deferrees that's got to be an awful, awful waiting game...

Penn only accepts or rejects deferees. Everybody gets only two shots, although waiting list is probably a worse chance than deferral.
