For UCLA

I am female, white, homosexual, and low income.
Major - Business economics (alternate: biology)
GPA - 4.2
ACT - 31
SAT - 1810 (retaking it in December)

  • I got a 4 on the AP Spanish exam and did not pass APUSH but I got an A in the course.
  • I have had nearly all As all 4 years but I received a D in Calculus I at a local community college that was never put on my high school transcript. Even though I received a D, my high school deemed me fit to move on to AP Calculus BC and I have an A in that class and hopefully UCLA will see that.
  • I am president of Science Olympiad (I was in it all 4 years)
  • I am captain of a Science Bowl team (I was in it for 2 years)
  • I am the founder and president of Spanish club (just created this year)
  • I have been in Student Government for 2 years I am currently Senior Class Secretary
  • I have been an unpaid tutor for either math or Spanish all 4 years (2 hours a week)
  • I have at least 60 hours of community service from Student Government
Feel free to ask for more information

I’d say you have a pretty good chance, but UCLA is a reach for most. I’d retake the ACT, not the SAT, if I were you, because it seems like you’re stronger there.
Just focus on writing great essays
And being homosexual isn’t like being an URM; it doesn’t influence anything

Okay thank you, and yeah I guess being homosexual in LA wouldn’t be news lol

I would like more feedback from other people too though

Are you instate for California?

@“aunt bea” yes

If your ACT was a little higher, I would say that your chances would be better.

Just curious; we’ve been getting a lot of students on here thinking that being LGBT is a hook. Where is that coming from? Not the hs counselors, right?

@“aunt bea” No I think it is just because homophobia is common and there are states where it is legal to discriminate against LGBT students in school so it is an obstacle we have to face. Also, would you say UCLA, as my test scores are now, is a reach or do I have a solid chance?

@“aunt bea” I don’t think anyone is really relying on their homosexuality to get them in either, I just list it along with my gender and race, etc

@maym0160 UCLA is über competitive, your 31 score is good, but if it were over 32 or better, you’d have a better chance.

AP scores are important, even though they aren’t supposed to consider them. You didn’t pass history and your SAT score is telling.

@“aunt bea” Well I’m sending both my SAT and ACT scores so wouldn’t they see that I did well on the ACT and not mind my SAT score? I only took the SAT once but the ACT seems to be better for me

Yes, but you have to remember that they will also see students with SAT scores of 2300 and ACT scores of 33-36. That’s why you need to have strong scores.

@“aunt bea” that’s true, thank you.

Here is some information to guide you:

Good luck!

@UWfromCA Thank you!

in-state for CA is actually a disadvantage because of our screwed-up, money-loving system (Hi, also a native californian here)

I disagree with @collegebound1516.

You have an advantage as a low income, state resident with leadership skills. Apply to UCLA, you never know.

Governor Brown, and the state of California are feeling the political pressure to support more instate residents for our California schools, especially for our low income, qualified, high-performing students. They are trying to add more spots for residents, with funding through the Cal grants, MCS, Blue &Gold, etc.

Yes, I pay a LOT for my children’s university educations, but there’s nothing like going to school in your home state. My dd, at UCD, loves her school, so we have no regrets paying full fees. Our son at Caltech, had his choice of elite schools (including UCLA), but he also did not want to venture far from home-so we pay full fees.

Good luck @maym0160, keep doing well and try to get that ACT score up!

@collegebound1516 Yeah I’ve heard about that… I already have a slim chance as it is
