For UCs...Specifically UCSD

Going into my senior year in high school...

Objective:
• SAT (breakdown): 1670; Reading 590 Writing 530 Math 550
• 2nd SAT (breakdown): 1810; Reading 640 Writing 590 Math 580
• SAT II: US History 700
• ACT: 26
• Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.5
• Weighted GPA: 4.4
• AP (place score in parenthesis): World History (3), Language Arts(3), US History(4)
• Senior Year Course Load: AP Calculus AB, AP Biology, AP Literature, AP Government, AP Physics, ASB
• Percentile: Not sure the exact number, but definitely above top 10 percent.
Subjective:
• Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): JV Swim(1 year), JV Track(1 year), ASB (4 years: yr 1 treasurer, yr 2 VP, yr 3 VP, elected yr 4 VP), Several clubs (no leadership)
• Honors: National Honor Society, California Scholarship Federation
• Job/Volunteer Experience: You're all going to kill me...I don't really have any. It's difficult to find volunteer work because the age limit was raised to 18. It's no excuse, but please try not to be too harsh on me. I'm really trying to find a way to get service hours and am actively searching for a job/internships.

I know my lack of ECs and low SATs are going to kill me. My first SAT I studied for a week and I studied for even less on my second SAT. I'm still contemplating whether or not to take the SAT a third time during my senior year.

My goal school was to go to UCSD and major in biochem or organic chem, but I know my chances are very slim looking at what I have so far...Should I start looking at other schools?

And I'm really sorry in advance if I wasted your time reading my fail college resume...I understand that I don't have the best portfolio, but I just wanted to see if I should keep even the tiniest amount of hope of getting into UCSD, or really any UC at all.

Maybe you should try for UC Riverside instead. The process is mostly a numbers game there and your stats should be enough to gain admission especially since you’re an in state student.

Trying to avoid the lower tier of UCs. How far of a reach is it for UCSD? I’m really disappointed that I haven’t been able to find a job/volunteer work and that my test scores suck. Everyone in my family has gone to UCLA or UCSD so I would be the first to be denied :/

Also, I know SDSU has been picky these past few years. Would you think SDSU would accept me?

For some reason, UCSD seems to value class rank very very highly (which does not look good for you). They use a formula when determining whether or not to accept applicants and class rank in it is huge. If you could do very well and somehow get your GPA up and class rank into the top 10%, you could manage it. Otherwise, I would apply to Riverside and then actively search for a job. Once you get into the real world, working hard is what matters.

P.S. I would study this summer for the SAT. Commit to studying and then do it. You can get higher scores because you got a 700 on USH!
