I am a junior this year and I plan to apply to UM engineering next year, and I wasn't sure what would look good
I was thinking about taking
AP chem
Ap english
AP spanish
AP calculus
and I need 2 more classes and I wanted to know if I should take computer class and physics or some other classes.
Also I want to know if I could get in with 3.6 gpa and 31 on ACT I live in michigan, my brother goes there, and some extra curriculums

although im not sure about AP classes (i live in India...so no concept of AP classes)....with your stats ull get in just fine....apply around november for quick decision by january....it helps that you are in-state...

physics would be ideal for engineering...but it would also add A LOT more work into your schedule...(chem and physics AP's are HARD)...statistics or computer classes would be easier alternatives.

It is hard to take chem and physics together however if you keep up on the work, it should go well... I'm in IB Physics (this is my 3rd yr in physics), AP Chemistry (this is my 2nd yr in chemistry), IB Biology (this is 2nd year in biology), AP English, IB History, IB Math/calculus. It's a very demanding schedule..you just have to study and prepare each day... but I really feel I am ready for engineering at U of M.

SO>>>my suggestion to you is to take physics and a social studies...

Trust me, your going to want to take physics. If even its not the AP, you still want to have some experience in that before you begin taking it at their engineering school. However, there is no reason why you can't take both chem and physics. If you like the two subjects go for it. Even if its hard, you just gotta pull through for the first semester and then not fail the second.

Thank you for all the suggestions. I think I'll definitely be taking physics next year....

I had another question though...
Does being a female help my chances of getting into U of M engineering????
I heard it did and I wasn't sure if they still do
so if anyone knows...

I don't really know, but I've heard that being a female helps at almost all engineering schools just because of the few number of female applicants they recieve. However, if you don't have the right stuff it doesn't matter what gender you are. I got in and am a female but I truly think that I would have gotten in even if male because my scores, gpa and ec's were pretty outstanding - if I may say so myself.

thank you for the quick reply..
So I'm guessing 3.6 and 31 on ACT isn't good enough to get accepted for engineering in U of M next year?
And how good does ec's have to be considered outstanding???

Fun4all, if I recall properly, you had a 34 on your ACT and a 3.7 Michigan GPA. Regardless of gender, you would get into Michigan.

Gudana, apply as early as possible...definitely before October. Preferably in late August or early September. Your ACT is fine, but your GPA is on the low side.
