12 for National Public Universities.

50 for National Universities.

Totaly different methodology used than USNWR which comes out online on Friday.

Biggest winner:
U Alabama- from #42 in USNWR up to #7 in Forbes.

Biggest loser:
UC- San Diego- from #8 in USNWR down to #57 in Forbes (ouch)
Pretty much the entire UC system except Berkley took a hit.

Let the arguments over methodology begin.

I thought Forbes ranked UF at #167?

[Forbes: UF is No. 167 among U.S. colleges | Gainesville.com | The Gainesville Sun | Gainesville, FL](http://www.gainesville.com/article/20080815/NEWS/108475751)

I can already envision that Gainesville Sun article being used to bash UF even though it appears to be wrong.

Retraction please ASAP???

The article was purelly a hatched job against UF.
People will just read the inflamitory statements and not bother to dig any deeper into that particular list.

[America’s Best Colleges sorted by Rank - Forbes.com](<a href=“Forbes List Directory”>Forbes List Directory)

As examples:

71 Cornell College in Iowa > # 121 Cornell University in NY.

135 Eckerd College > # 167 UF

AND NOT THAT BEING RANKED # 167 WAS ACTUALLY BAD.
UF’ Company includes:

155 Illinois

167 UF

178 Washington

199 UC Santa Barbara

215 UT Austin

256 UC San Diego

272 Penn State

And the biggest laugher of all:
University of Miami- # 417

So the “Best Colleges” ranking includes all academic institutions (with or without graduate schools) in the US while the “Best National Universities” only include institutions with graduate schools?

They have sliced & diced these rankings every conceivable way.
UF is:

12 for National Public Universities.

16 Best Public colleges.

50 for National Universities.

167 for “all” colleges

The big list is really not useful at all…because it factors in liberal arts and other useless factors and all that. I mean, New College above UF? Come on. Good thing this list means nothing, as the business rankings are all I care about.

I believe Forbes used ratemyprofessor.com for one of the ranking criteria. What kind of a joke is that?

both USNWR and Forbes are flawed… but at least USNWR has some quantitative data to base itself from. Forbes doesn’t really make much sense.
