My DD who would hate to know I asked, but how tight is a "forced" triple in Farley? We are traveling over 1000 mi so everything has to be in the first and only minivan trip....thanks for any advice!

It will be tight, so space saving devices are essential!
Bed, Bath and Beyond is a great place to find the velvet hangars that take up very little closet space. A small clip on fan for her bed ( which I assume will be lofted) is great to have as Farley does not have AC. You may also want to grab a small wire to caddy to clip to her bedrail for her phone, chapstick etc. An octopus for computer wires and lights will also help to keep the room organized. I would also recommend purchasing MANY command hooks. They can be used for hanging towels, jewelry, hairdryer, coats etc.
Although you are only making one trip out to South Bend, rest assured you will have time to shop once you arrive on campus. There is a Target, Wal-Mart and Bed, Bath and Beyond within 10 minutes of campus. The girls will probably want to split the cost of a rug, fridge and window fan. It will be cramped, but it won’t bother the kids as much as it will bother the parents. Enjoy Frosh O. It is a great time for both the students and the parents.

Thanks for the advice! My daughter is so psyched and actually doesn’t have a lot of “stuff”…I am just looking at the ways to creatively crate her winter clothes (the skis aren’t coming; she’ll have to tube at Bendix Woods instead!) and the electronics…like a printer.

She probably won’t need a printer. They are easily accessible throughout the campus. My son said most kids did not bring one; not needed and take up valuable space. You can shipped her winter clothes in October. She could swap out her summer clothes and send them back to you, using the same box. Most kids do tend to swap out their clothes for the change of seasons.

Thanks again…glad to know about the printer (now that I have my printer back, she is eye-ing my keurig!)

I would hold off on the keurig. DD took one last year and rarely used it. Just took up valuable space. She bought a $25 electric kettle instead at Target. She and her roomate used it constantly (as did many other girls on the floor). Amazing what one can make with some boiling water! Also, plenty of places on campus to grab coffee.

Good to know. I probably still have my old hot pot from my college days!

Your DD can rent xc skis at the ND golf course. [Cross-Country Skiing // RecSports // University of Notre Dame](http://recsports.nd.edu/programs/informal-recreation-and-special-events/cross-country-skiing/)

There are also two sets of groomed xc ski trails 10 minutes from campus at St. Patrick’s (IN) and Madeline Bertrand (MI) county parks, with rental skis available. St. Patrick’s also has a tubing hill.

Thanks for the ski info!

Hmmm…may want to hold off on hot pot/electric kettle…

Not a traditional hot plate or “hot pot” from my college days, but something like this:

[Aroma Hot H20 X-Press 7-Cup Stainless Steel Elec… : Target](http://www.target.com/p/aroma-hot-h20-x-press-7-cup-stainless-steel-electric-kettle/-/A-13795316#?lnk=sc_qi_detaillink)

Auto shut off as soon as the water boils. Must turn it on with a switch. In reality, safer than a curling iron.

Hi omermom,

First of all, congrats on your daughter’s acceptance to ND and getting placed into one of the best female dorms! I am actually an upperclasswoman in Farley.

To be honest: the forced triples are going to be very tight. My advice:

*Start making the “packing piles” now, and then try to halve them. I promise you, if she has not worn or used something in the last few months, she will NOT use it at college. There simply is not enough space in a dorm room, let alone a forced triple, for tons of extra clothes, gadgets, etc.
*Coordinating with roommates on Facebook is super helpful–have one person bring the fridge, one person might bring a small TV, etc. I suggest not bringing or buying any furniture until you see the room for yourself and decide how you want it set up.
*Printer is definitely not necessary. There is an industrial printer in the basement and every student gets $100 in printer credits. She’ll definitely use the extra desk space
*You cannot use hot pots, cookers, etc. in the rooms. Farley is an older dorm with older electrical wiring so it’s not a good idea. There are microwaves on every floor and a recently-renovated kitchen in the basement–there’s always someone down there baking!

Hope this is helpful. Best of luck as y’all get ready for this next step.
