Forced Triples -- UGH!

Very upset that my child has been informed that they are putting a third person in the double room. We petitioned for exception. I find this just infuriating. Anyone have experience with the petition process to be able to keep the double as a double?

Various reasons for this, but of course mostly budget related. California’s tax revenues suffered due to a bad economy starting around 2008. Pensions took a bigger bite out of those revenues than expected also. Bottom line, less money for new dorms/facilities. And, don’t forget, CA’s population has increased. Economy is better now, but it takes years to plan and build. And does it make sense, because enrollments might drop in five years due to demographics.

My daughter in another state is in a triple that was turned into a quad. She LOVES it. She and her roommates get a long super well and our bill was lowered. Her school overenrolled so they are tight for dorm space. Hopefully it will all work out for your child.

This is a definite hot button for me. Poor planning on the colleges part should never result in ridiculously small
amount of personal space. There are some kids who just need introvert time. Build a new dorm or get your admission metrics under control.

I doubt the major issue was planning … it was primarily a funding issue

It may not even be a funding issue^^.
A class can be overenrolled resulting in more freshman triples, but if the school doesn’t plan on being overenrolled for future freshman classes, they wouldn’t need another dorm.

UCLA is almost all triples now, and they are still lining up to get in. I don’t think they call them ‘forced’ triples anymore, just triples.

@twoinanddone Yep, even 2nd and 3rd year students are in triples at UCLA. That’s just the way it is. Still an excellent housing situation there IMO. UCSD expected a 21% yield rate this year and ended up in the 30s, so they are having to find room for 1200 more students.

If UCSB students take advantage of the 2+2 housing guarantee program, the apartments are pretty nice those last couple of years. I recommend the 2nd floor at Santa Ynez for the vaulted ceilings and more windows.
