Hi–
My D is applying for college for the 2018-2019 school year. She got an email from Fordham saying that the $70 application fee is “waived” if she applies in a certain time period. Just wondering if anyone else received this email. Is it a common practice? Curious.
I think Fordham sends a lot of these to kids with good standardized test scores (and an additional filter might be being Catholic). My higher stats kid got this e-mail early (September, maybe?) but lower stats kid didn’t get it until later in the application cycle (December, maybe?).
Yes, my D got that years ago and I don’t think it is unusual – but still it is nice to save the application fee.
Some kids get it, and some kids don’t. One of my twins got it…the other had higher test scores…but didn’t get one. Go figure.
Congratulations, it is nice to receive! And saves money…
My girls ended up choosing Fordham, so if you have any questions, feel free to PM.
Thanks for your responses! My daughter is applying to Fordham as a financial reach school. Even though she is likely to get the NM tuition scholarship, it is still probably not an option unless she is able to get some additional scholarships. It looks like a beautiful school (the RH campus).
@crazy4info - one of my twins did not get much money, but she really loved the school. she wore FA and admissions a pretty heartfelt letter requesting that they re-evaluate her FA. They did, and they gave her considerably more money.
So just keep that in mind next spring, appealing is always an option.
S got that email this week. I figured it was because he scored well on standardized and goes to a Catholic school.
Our son got a letter (I assume he got an email as well). I figured it was because he visited; his SAT is around the lower/middle part of the range, and we’re not Catholic. Since his GPA is in the B range Fordham is probably a reach for him, bit it doesn’t hurt to apply.
D18 got the letter. She visited earlier this summer. She has pretty good scores and GPA. Not Catholic.
D18 visited, 4.0, avg SAT, got the fee waiver. Will visit open house in October and apply RD.
Our DD’18 has a pretty strong SAT and GPA and goes to a Catholic school. She got the fee waiver too. Best of luck to all. GO RAMS!
My daughter had “meh” SAT but a good ACT, had the fee waiver and went to a Catholic HS. Visited twice and though it wasn’t her first choice (in fact Fordham was pretty much on the bottom) out of all them and it was the one she chose. She had received the email for fee waiver over the summer.
@MomTheChauffer - if it was near the bottom, what changed her mind? Which campus?
@byadg123 - my daughter didn’t want to stay in NY, she wanted to go out of state. Her number one was University of Miami and that was her first rejection. Then she was accepted to UC San Diego and UC Santa Barbara but they give no aid whatsoever. And I wasn’t about to pay $65K a year for a state school, I don’t care how good they are. She HATED SUNY Albany because she didn’t like the campus. Elon was great, but they offered her a great scholarship in what she wanted to major in when she was doing the applications process, but changed her mind to something different, so out the window went that school. Then it was down to Manhattan College and Fordham Rose Hill. She had visited Fordham twice, the first time was to visit a friend and he gave her his own tour and she fell in love with it. Then we did a tour a year later and he was the worst tour guide. Heck, I grew up in the Bronx, loved Fordham and I even toured it while in HS. But this tour with my daughter even made me not liking it too much. He just went on and on about Campus Ministry and didn’t even show us inside of Martyr’s Court (“This is Martyr’s Court” with a wave of the hand, “just pray you don’t get assigned to live here, it’s the worst”.) Gee, okay???
When we went to visit Manhattan as soon as she saw it from the Major Deegan, she wasn’t interested. After visiting it for accepted students day, she wasn’t too thrilled. We went to the accepted students day at Fordham (not the big President’s Day thing) and it was like a breath of fresh air. Better tour. Nicer day. I think because it was nice and sunny that day and cloudy and cold the other time we were there helped a lot. Plus with the financial aid package Fordham offered, helped make the decision. Even though Manhattan was a less expensive school, they offered more in scholarship but less in aid. Fordham on the other hand, much more expensive, gave a much smaller scholarship and a great grant package. It was going to cost me $1000 a year more out of pocket to send her to Fordham than Manhattan after I crunched the numbers. We went right to admissions and I wrote out the check for the deposit and we hit the bookstore and bought the Fordham gear.
@MomTheChauffer SUNY Albany campus is all sorts of ugly and Elon is beautiful – I grew up in NY and live in NC. We’ve looked at about 15 colleges and she’s applying to 3 in NC plus Fordham-LC and Barnard. Financial aid will be critical and the calculators don’t help me much since we have a small business that has assets but is currently not producing any income. She and my wife are going to Prez Open House in October (I did a basic tour w/her in April) but I guess it’s mostly for fun since she’s definitely applying early action. I don’t know if she’ll get brownie points for attending. Couldn’t hurt.
Did your daughter just start?
@byadg123 - My daughter graduated in May. She did do one summer session at LC so that gave her an idea what that was like. LC is very different from RH.
@MomTheChauffer - daughter wants to live in Manhattan and anything from Columbia University to Beautician School would be fine. She might apply to Gabelli though I wonder if everyone will be a Wall Street wannabe who couldn’t get into Stern.
@byadg123 - if she is admitted to Gabelli she will have the world at her feet. Fordham’s services for Gabelli kids are great. Resume services, printing services, loads of internships and the job fairs are great if you are in Gabelli. Just about everyone my daughter knew in Gabelli graduated with a job.
@MomTheChauffer - Thanks. I asked in a new thread but just in case you only monitor those you’ve frequented: Did your D have for “expand your mind” electives or was it all biz beyond the liberal arts core?
Moot point. Her Aug SAT math is 660, 10 beneath the Gabelli floor and she doesn’t want to take again.
