sovereigndebt…do you think getting the “early early” admit notice will bode well for merit aid? We had the opportunity to fill out the FAFSA on the phone via the Fordham referral company, and then we completed the CSS Profile on our own. Need-wise, it would appear we probably don’t get aid (that’s on paper – we DO need aid, especially being 56 year old parents who still have a 12 year old to educate!). My daughter is a National Merit Commended Student, and her SAT scores are 2120, but the math and verbal alone are 1340. 4.1 weighted GPA. Lots of activities and some leadershiop, but not really service-oriented actvities. She is thrilled to have gotten her first of eight notices as an acceptance to her top choice school!

Yikes! I didn’t know Fordham was sending out acceptances already. DS hasn’t heard anything. I thought he had a decent chance: NMSF, rank 1/242, gpa: 3.98 uw/4.34 w, 34 ACT and good ECs. I don’t think I will tell him that people are being accepted already, it will only make him nervous. Did all of you show a lot of interest? We weren’t able to visit and I hope that doesn’t effect him negatively.

My3D’s:

I dont work for Fordham and have no particular insight into the machinations of the financial aid office and admissions/scholarship committee, other than anecdotes and observations.

I do know that they give generous grants to kids sometimes who didnt quite make the grade for scholarships…IF they qualify for financial aid. Unfortunately, what any university thinks you need and what YOU think you need causes huge…GAPS in financial aid. Some schools fill that gap with loans and say they meet need, which is of course a laugh. It is what it is.

Many factors go into decisions, from SAT, GPA, Class Rank, special skills, recommendations, racial diversity, economic diversity, geographic diversity and sometimes whether your kid attended a catholic school. (public school kids are admitted as equals, but some scholarships are restricted to catholic school graduates, e.g.)

all you can do is weigh all the acceptance letters in March and pull the trigger where you feel your kid will do the best, and perhaps can afford it the best. That is highly subjective for each family.

Does Fordham give scholarships to kids below 1400 SAT’s? I have heard of examples, but the general rule is that is the cutoff. If you filled out the CSS and FAFSA, to be supplemented at year’s end as needed, and with your W-2’s and taxes, you may well get in grant form what you might have gotten in scholarship funds. At the end of the day, it doesnt matter, except for the prestige of scholarships.

Fordham is very expensive. People who attended Fordham 25 years ago are shocked at how much it costs and what the admission standards are now.

I wish you the very best.

momma: Dont fret or be nervous. These early admits and likely letters are often a product of the jumble of huge volumes of applications. If your son is as qualified as you indicate, I doubt there will be any problem.

The only people who need to be nervous are those who are below the 50th percentile in SAT scores of admitted students at Fordham.

mommaof5, I agree with what sovereign wrote. Dont worry and the fact that your child has not gotten a heads up is not in any way a reflection of what is to come. We did not visit (not this child-our older visited a few years ago and had stronger stats and did not get in).

After filling out the CSS profile, there was a series of codes indicating what futher materials were needed by the respective schools. The two other schools to which the profile would be sent indicated that tax returns and W2s from 2012, and, in one case, 2011, would have to be sent. However, there was no such code next to the Fordham name, so I assume I don’t need to send them anything further? The FAFSA had been completed previously via phone by a company Fordham referred us to in the acceptance email. They said they would be in touch done the road for supporting documents. But does it sound right that IO need send nothing further to Fordham for the CSS Profile?

I havent called yet; planned to do so tomorrow. If they didnt ask for it on the phone and it is not coded on the CSS, my guess would be you are fine but go ahead and call the Fordham Fin Aid office to confirm.

You have until Feb 1 for the FAFSA, right? I received the email about admissions/FAFSA but had already submitted the CSS profile.

emotup: is it your impression that after filing the CSS Profile, nothing else is required to be mailed to Fordham? Two other schools my daughter has applied to ask for tax returns and W2 Forms. On our CSS receipt, it was blank next to Fordham’s name – no mention of the other materials the two other schools asked for. I could call the Fin Aid office at Fordham, but wonder how other people interpret the CSS instructions.

I did not see anything about sending them now. I know that some schools request them later. I was under the impression that the CSS profile is enough for an early/estimated package.

sovereigndebt & dowzerw: Thanks for the encouragement. Congratulations to everyone who has been accepted!!!

accepted to fordham!!
