Hi I just received the email from Fordham that I have been deferred. This is a huge blow since I always thought Fordham might be a target/safety school for me.
My basic numbers are GPA of 3.9 and 1380 new SAT; 5 APs with two 3s in Chemistry and Language Arts.
I have a quite of research activities and volunteer work as extracurriculars. Also from New Jersey.
I have applied to UMich as EA for the Informations major in the LSA, I visited the school twice as a junior etc.
If I am deferred from Fordham for EA how are my chances at Michigan or even other schools like Penn State, Wisconsin, Tulane and Villanova?
@penngirlpending I did show tons of interest to Michigan Wisconsin and other schools as well since I visited all of them… But wouldn’t relying on recs/essays be risky? Thank you
While I can’t say for sure, you’ll probably need a small boost from your recs/essays to be accepted to Michigan. Take a look at the common data set for 2015-2016. Composite SAT score for the 25th percentile was 1930 on the old SAT. Your new SAT score converts to roughly 1950 give or take. Since your GPA is good, you’re overall just a bit below average in terms of raw stats.
Logically, you’ll need a little more juice from the rest of your application to get in. So, depending on the rest of your app you have an below average to average chance of getting in. Don’t be discouraged by Fordham though, I would say that you’re one or two good essays away from getting into any of the schools you mentioned.
I’m not sure. I was accepted into Gabelli. I’m from NJ - 3.6 weighted GPA 29 ACT Good EC’s, 1 AP (taking 2 more senior year) Good Essay (i think). I did not visit. Sounds like your resume is a lot better than mine. One note: my public school is VERY good and i think that might give my app a bump.
@jihyun89
I’m not saying to rely entirely on recs and essays, but colleges look at them after looking at grades and ECs. @Laerai I would be careful judging the SAT score and GPA.
I’m assuming you have been taking a lot of rigorous courses and the 3.9 is unweighted with honors AP classes etc.
Your SAT score is a little low. Because you are an out of state applicant, admission to UMich is much more difficult. There are a limited number of slots for out of state students versus instate. Also, you come from NJ which is a fairly competitive state, and not everyone is applying to UMich so it’s not a worry however a lot of people OOS are interested. You should generally keep a low expectation when getting decisions back from colleges.
Yes, a deferral from Fordham is difficult to stomach but EA round is pretty competitive because many top candidates apply usually for free, and are aiming for merit scholarships.
