Hi, I’m applying to Fordham early decision and I was wondering what my chances are…

Activities:
Key Club- A club focusing on community service where I was awarded a service award for 50 hours of service at including annual park clean up, serving the homeless in local shelters, and fundraising.

International Studies Club- I am the founder and president of International Studies Club, a club where we learn about cultures from all over the world, fundraise for an elementary school in Peru, and this year we are starting a pen pal relationship with children in Peru.

Senior Mentorship- In senior mentorship I give school tours, provide guidance on campus for the freshmen, and help ease the transition from middle school to high school for rising freshmen.

Kumon Learning Center- I tutored students in Math and Reading in grades K-12 on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.

International Studies Abroad- I spent a month in Spain taking Spanish classes at the University of Salamanca, earning college credits.

International Studies Abroad- I spent a month in Peru in a Spanish language immersion and community service program including 40 hours of active engagement at an orphanage.

International Studies Abroad- I spent a month in Costa Rica studying Spanish and working at La Carpio orphanage for young children. I built handrails, painted homes, and did repair work.

Civics & Government Institute- I participated in a small learning community which focused on governmental practices including a mock congress, writing bills, and debating social issues.

Employee at Tommy Lasagna’s Pizza & Pasta Company- Multiple tasks in a new business, including counter duties, phone orders, cashier, serving and home delivery.

HOMECorp- I organized a team of six people to raise money for HOMECorp. Solicited donations, ran fundraiser events. Raised over $12,000.

Both parents didn’t go to college, father is out of the picture.

You have great ECs, you’re taking rigorous classes, and have a great GPA. One weakness would be test scores. That said, I think you have excellent chances!

@diplomill so my last name is Tierney, but im not 100% sure if i am related to the Bill Tierney who has a building named after them. Should i say im related to him even though im not completely sure?

Unless it improves, your ACT is the weak point of your application and may hurt you. But good luck.

And in no way should you mention Bill Tierney since you don’t even know him. If you say you are related they could easily ask the family and if they never heard your name before your application could well be doomed.

You may want to think about waiting forever your new scores to come back before applying. You run the risk of getting rejected with your current ACT score. May be better to have a higher score in hand and apply RD.
