Fordham for musical theater?

Does anyone know about Fordham's performance program. I heard you cannot major in MT and tha main focus is on acting, not dance or voice.

That is correct. Fordham has a BA by audition program that is Theater Performance (acting based) and they do not offer MT.

I believe (but you’d have to check) that a student can supplement with dance courses at Alvin Ailey and vocal training at The Singer’s Forum for credit. They have a MT course. You can study directing and playwriting. They occasionally put on musicals but not as much as some of the other straight theater programs, it seems. They have a senior showcase.

There is no musical theater training, per se, at Fordham. They offer a BA in acting/performance, and though they do incorporate music in some of their plays (or so my D was told by students and teachers when she auditioned in 2008), they seldom do musicals and other than a random course or two, they don’t teach musical theater.

A girl I go to school with transferred from Fordham and I believe that she was a performance major. I’ll ask her tomorrow if she knows anything about the program!

A few years ago I heard a Phantom on tour who had also done the role on Broadway. He was a wonderful singer and so well-spoken (at a meet the cast event). Turns out he majored in drama at Fordham while taking voice lessons on the side. Seemed to work out well for him! He said that at the time he was a student he felt he’d be taken more seriously as an actor if he wasn’t a voice or MT major. Ouch.

The actor had a point. A few years ago, my D became acquainted with a woman who has been on Broadway in a number of musicals, and majored in MT at U of Michigan. She was in our town appearing in a play (equity house). She talked a lot about how difficult it was to be taken seriously as an actor (in other words, to be cast in plays) when your resume is filled with musicals and an MT or vocal perf. degree.
