Fordham was a safety school for me, and I was awarded the Dean's Scholarship (22K a year). Does anybody know when decisions will be arriving for Fordham's Honors Program? This would be a major consideration in whether or not I would attend.

I was wondering the same thing too. I am hoping to get into the Global Business Honors Program

Some early action honors admits will receive notification as early as mid-february. RD and other honors admits will receive notification in April.

If you have a strong interest in the program, I would suggest contacting the director of the program.

Thanks for the advice yenrod. Is the director’s contact information clearly stated somewhere on the website?

Also, are there financial benefits to the honors program?

PS: I was an EA applicant accepted with Dean’s Scholarship. 2240 SAT 31 ACT 100% GPA Tons of EC’s, 6 Leadership Positions, and awards. Do you think I qualify for the Computer Science Honors Program?

You should be able to find his info online. The director of the Fordham College Rose Hill program is Dr. Harry Nasuti

There are no specific “honors scholarships” but most/all honors students receive some sort of merit award during the general scholarship process.

I’m unfamiliar with the computer science honors program, but your stats should qualify you for the FCRH honors program. However, the essay is strongly considered, so there’s no guarantee of admission based just on stats.

There’s also a lot of Fordham students with stats like yours who are not in the honors program. Fordham has several upper class honors societies/seminars which are excellent opportunities for Fordham’s best students.

They have different amounts for the Dean’s Scholarship?

I received 10K, my stats are:

2310 SAT
4.1 GPA

I really wanted to go to Fordham, but even if I commute, it would still be $30K a year. And then I’d have to get a car. That’s a lot of money, considering I got some very big scholarships to some lesser colleges. My parents said I could go to Fordham, they would make do, but honestly I don’t want to put that on them.

stereo, your Dean’s Scholarship was $22K?

Your dean’s scholarship can still increase. Nothing is final until April. Your SAT scores would indicate that you probably would receive a much larger scholarship. What is your GPA out of?

My GPA is 4.1 out of 4.0.

I told my Dad he needs to fill out the CSS, so maybe I could get more aid from Fordham.

It went something like this:

Didn’t I fill that out already?

No, Dad, that was the FAFSA, Fordham wants both.

OK, where’s the application?

(20 minutes later)

ARE THEY OUT OF THEIR MINDS? THIS IS THE MOST INVASIVE FORM I’VE EVER SEEN. NEXT THEY’LL BE ASKING ME HOW MANY MILLIGRAMS OF LIPITOR I TAKE EVERY DAY. FORGET IT, WE’LL LOOK AT OTHER SCHOOLS. BUNCH OF WISE GUYS.

Mom and I are still laughing, Dad is still muttering.

ccbound11: There are over 250 colleges/universities/programs that require the CSS profile listed on the College Board website. Better check the list to see if any of the other schools you’ve applied to want it also. Your Dad may want to rethink his position.

To answer ccbound11’s question, scholarships are variable upon financial need.

Thanks, all, for the help.

Yes, all top private colleges in the U.S. require the CSS profile.

I’m not sure I understand a 4.1/4.0 GPA (maybe post an unweighted gpa?) but it seems to me that you have an excellent chance of getting a great scholarship. Now fill out that CSS!

In my school, A+ is 4.33, A is 4.0. I always thought that that’s considered a 4.0 scale?

Yeah, I’ll try to get Dad to fill that out, but even I thought the questions were incredibly invasive. Why isn’t the FAFSA enough anymore? Is it because of the increase in college applications that they’re demanding a magnifying glass to go over everyone’s personal finances?

In this age of hacking and identity theft, why does all this info have to be sent to the offices of colleges? Just doesn’t seem right, not even to me.

I think that’s considered to be a 4.33 scale. So you have a 4.1/4.33. Still pretty good.

The CSS offers a much more complete view of a family’s financial situation. In theory, it’s supposed to help colleges better give money where its needed. With the FAFSA, it’s easier for families with a lot of wealth to appear like they need more aid.
Whether or not the CSS is effective is debatable. But it’s there, it’s standard, and I haven’t heard of any problems of identity theft/other issues because of it.

We found the CSS to be very helpful in getting more aid from the Ivy our oldest attended. It gives the school a much better picture of things like tuition being paid at other schools, including elementary if applicable, and unusual expenses, than does the FAFSA.

Also, if there are unusual things either coming up (eg, medical expenses) or that happened since you filed tax returns, etc, write a letter to the school/s and tell them about it. My mother died suddenly and we had to shoulder all funeral expenses; this was after the aid packages for the following year had been determined. Suddenly we had a 10k loan with its attendant payments. We called the univ & they said send us a copy of the bill from the funeral director — two weeks later we got a new package from the FA office.

You have to view yourselves as partners with the FA office in getting the student through the school, and not view them as “the enemy.” And you also have to remember that they are working to get several thousand other kids through the same expensive school. And that most of the staff of the FA office are regular middle class people in office jobs, not zillionaires looking down their noses at you.

to get this thread back on topic: the honors program person i talked to said that honors program offers would be sent out this week to early action applicants. i just got in to mcgill today and unless fordham offers me honors program, i will head off to cananda.
would it be pretentious to call and ask if i got into honors program, or should i wait a month or so for a letter? i am so anxious and want to know ASAP!

I found out over a week ago that I got in. I would wait, it can’t be more than a few days.

I have a friend at McGill. He loves it, but it seems like most of his classes are MASSIVE (several hundred). This is the exact opposite of Fordham Honors, where classes are between 10-15 students (and Fordham in general has very small classes - not usually bigger than 35). Some students don’t mind huge lecture-style classes, but others prefer small, discussion-based classes.
