So I got in to Fordham LC Early Action and I visited a couple of days ago; I definitely really liked a lot of aspects of it, but I still have a few questions.
I'm a big sports guy; would I be kinda alone with that interest on campus? I've read that sports isn't big there at all (this doesn't just apply to Fordham's sports, just sports in general)l.
How often do kids go back and forth from each campus?
If you wanted sports and all the dorms and life and so forth, then RH would be a better fit for you. And LC is a fine liberal arts school but it has a lot of theater and dance people, a decidedly urbanesque feel to it and urbanesque students NOT looking for athletics and typical college life.
There are party animals at every school on every campus. But my advice is to avoid them. They will distract you and bring you down and Fordham is a serious academic school and professors wont hesitate to flunk you. Be warned.
If you want a big campus, football stadium, basketball arena/gym and soccer, baseball and other sports, then you might consider asking IMMEDIATELY if you can move to RH. There is communications major at RH.
They are both very good. But the top students get the gigs in Manhattan at televisions networks and cable studios. Which is why partying is not a good idea.
In 2009, the Good Morning America Executive Producer (a Fordham alumnus) got U2 to come to Fordham Rose Hill and perform a free concert live on GMA. It was amazing. Again, only TOP students get those internships.
Students do travel to RH for sporting events. But to say that sports are not a big Fordham thing is an understatement. Something else to consider is that there are professional sports in NYC – I belive Fr. McShane said there are 9 men’s professional sports teams.
Some students go to RH a couple times a week – it all depends on major and schedule. Travel is faciltated by the Ram Vans.
I never thought I’d say this, but perhaps you should look at Villanova – sports are big, and partying, too, by reputation. They have a communications major and are reasonably close to the major city of Philadelphia.
@KvotheFan I visited Villanova and hated it; it just seemed too preppy and non-diverse to me, and their facilities weren’t great.
@sovreigndebt I kinda wanted more of a direct in-city campus (plus a more diverse one), so LC seemed more appealing; RH seemed to me like a campus I would like to to be able to go to once in a while, just not one I’d like to live on.
Honestly professional sports mean a lot more to me, so LC offered an easier way to go see them. Sure, I’d go to a few Fordham games, but pro sports is really what I care about (sorry for not clarifying that).
But thanks for clarifying that the parties are all at RH; I figured that, just didn’t know yet.
I’m starting college at LC this Fall, but I assume sports are really lacking in every aspect in the LC campus, and that’s something I really like. I really doubt that a lot of people who are big sport fans would choose LC when they could go to RH which is so near and offers many sports events and the opportunity to be in sport teams, etc.
Obviously there are going to be a few people who do like sports a lot, but they’ll probably be hard to find.
I think Communication is actually one of Fordham’s strongest majors, and the location of LC is great for internships.
Parties at Fordham in general do not seem to be very prevalent.
It looks like you are a better fit for RH.
Okay…its all in personal preferences. Not a lot of students attend pro sports…too expensive and not good times for studying etc.
There are LC kids who to go RH for sports, like Football. More RH kids take classes at LC in upperdivision than vice versa.
But again…the vibe is different at RH than LC. Lots of RH kids TALK about pro sports all the time…huge sports fans. And there are Fordham alumni in MAJOR sports media jobs. BIG TIME
But frankly RH seems to me a better place to be for the overall college experience. You can do Manhattan on Wednesdays (no classes) and many do that. And on weekends.
Fordham IS very diverse. And always trying to be more so. If you are a minority, its always a challenge because its an elite private catholic institution. But there are many minority athletes at RH.
Villanova is very preppy and known for being a bit snobby. Fine school.
Fordham has televised football games and televised basketball games. All at RH.
I would really think hard and ask admissions to move you…right away. Just my two cents. Communications at RH is fabulous. The BEST students get the gigs, however.
