Fordham Merit Scholarships/Need Based Financial Aid

@RelocatedYankee This is the first full financial package we’ve received so far, so hard to compare its bottom line with anything other than the state universities where I know we won’t qualify for any need-based aid. Fordham did get close to what our FAFSA was. Still, since we can’t afford the FAFSA number, Fordham is probably NFW for us. Too bad, I think it would be a good choice for our son.

So my D did get letter today with scholarship information but cannot log into the system. They were missing information so I had to go and fax it to them today. The award in the mail is merit only 34K Deans Scholarship but it does not specify if it is just for year 1 or all 4 years. The initial EA letter said at least 15K per year Deans scholarship. I tired to log in again after faxing info this morning but it isn’t entered yet. Can anyone comment on whether their merit was one year or all four years? I tired to call but office is closed. Confusing.

My S received his package today. After receiving packages from Fairfield and Providence- this was very dissapointing. He received Jogues Scholarship of $10000 and Fordham need based Grant of 1,200. We have an EFC of 55,000 but have triplets and have 3 kids going to school at once. Above listed schools gave much more federal aid. Anyone know why they are not even close to our EFC?

Also - does anyone know if there is an appeal process listed on their website?

@Veryapparent I’m pretty sure it’s for all four years provided the annual GPA requirement is met, etc.

We would love to know the appeal process as well. Son reviewed package in portal and received $12,500 and a Pell grant for an EFC of $56 total (4 students in college next year :(), and a 4.2 GPA, 32 ACT, with 5 APs. I’m confused about the process as we ran the NPC with the exact same numbers as applied with FAFSA/CSS, and received an estimate of $48,000, which is very different than $20,000. We wouldn’t have even bothered applying if we didn’t there was going to be achance of affording it. Santa Clara came through with $53,000, so I guess we know where he’s going!

In the financial aid portal, my son got an Award totaling $37,900.00 and a Fordham Need-Based Grant totaling $32,400.00 plus $5,500 in student loans. There is no name next to the Award so is that a scholarship?

I think I am reading the portal wrong, the total is $32400 + $5500 = $37900 for those keeping track. I guess no merit aid/scholarship offered even though the NPC showed he could be eligible for one. We had already withdrawn his application after getting in ED somewhere else, but still got the mail with the aid.

D got a total of $15,000. (Plus loans) Ugh. Our EFC is $14,500! Sadly she has terrible SAT scores - 1,310. Everything else in her application is great: 4.0 unweighted, maxed out APs and Honors, started a design firm, great letters, etc.

She has a twin applying to various colleges but even without that, $60,000/year is way over our budget.

@lmmol unfortunately Fordham isn’t great when it comes to meeting full need. As for the Fordham package not being as generous as the ones from Fairfield and Providence, that’s not surprising since those 2 are less selective. Fordham’s acceptance rate is 48% with average GPA 3.6, SAT 1270 and ACT 29, while Fairfield has a 61% acceptance rate, GPA 3.48, SAT 1190 and ACT 27. Providence has a 55% acceptance rate and average scores a bit lower than Fairfeild’s.

DS attends a Catholic school in the Northeast with loads of kids who apply to those 3 schools and their GCs discourage them from applying to Fordham unless they have high stats or their families can afford it.

So I received the Loyola Scholorship, a Tuition Award, and a NYS Tap Grant. Are these all based on the CSS Profile and am I still awaiting need based financial aid based on the FAFSA or are one of those awards need based? I hear people saying it says “Fordham need based grant” but maybe I am misinterpreting them. I also sent in the FAFSA late since there was a problem with it so that is why I’m trying to figure out whether I am still yet to receive any need based aid. My family’s income isn’t huge so to afford the school I would need a bit more money

My older daughter is at Santa Clara and loves it! It’s surprising that you got more from Santa Clara than Fordham. My neighbor last year got around $20000 at Fordham and 0 at Santa Clara. Many kids with high stats get very little at Santa Clara and then some get a lot! Congrats to your child!!

@introtoxx Sadly a lot of colleges these days ‘rank’ applicants for financial aid. If they want you more, they’ll offer you more financial aid. It sucks, but it’s what a lot of schools do these days :frowning:
