Fordham or Holy Cross?

Hi. I was accepted to Fordham University early action and got an acceptance letter from College of the Holy Cross last Saturday. I am very interested in history and hope to someday earn a teaching license. I have considered educational administration as well. Excluding finances, which school would be the better choice? thanks!

Holy Cross–hands down, Good luck

Holy Cross has a strong academic reputation.

I disagree profusely. Its not “hands down” at all. They are both Jesuit colleges but different in their setting, size, legacy, opportunities and demographics. Congratulations on being accepted to both of these very prestigious Jesuit colleges! Well done.

Holy Cross is a highly respected and very selective small LAC in Worcester Mass, a couple of hours outside of Boston. Its a blue collar town. Pretty campus. Undergraduate college. Strong in history.

Fordham is an urban campus in the Bronx. Gothic and gorgeous, next to the Botanical Gardens and Bronx Zoo. You have NYC at your beckon call: a sports mecca, if Fordham sports doesnt do it for you. Fordham is a nationally ranked National University, with significant research going on, including doctoral programs, a law school and MBA program. It also has a Lincoln Center campus in Manhattan.

Fordham has unparalleled opportunities for internships…yes, even for History majors. There are significant teaching internships, particularly for helping underprivileged kids. Its history faculty are amazing with superb credentials. Look on their website to see for yourself.

History is a very rigorous major and a lot more difficult and competitive than most people realize. Its not for the faint of heart. You must have exceptional writing skills or you will drown and likely fail. Fordham has all the benefits of a large national university while being an enclosed medium to small undergraduate campus at Rose Hill (about 5,000 undergrads). They play Holy Cross in football every year. Fordham is A10 in basketball (Xavier, Temple, Rhode Island, UMass, Richmond, Saint Louis, LaSalle etc.)

Attend the accepted student orientations. Particularly at Fordham. Its awesome and well organized. See for yourself.

Best of luck to you.

“a couple of hours outside of Boston”??? You must have a very slow automobile: it’s 46 miles from Holy Cross to City Hall in Boston

Thank you all, esp ghostbuster

Fair enough Crusader. Sorry about that and my apologies. Its been awhile since I was through Worcester.

Its a flip of the coin in many respects and really comes down to personal preferences and perhaps loyalties.

Ben: If you want to be a Boston guy then maybe Holy Cross is your thing. But if NYC beckons you, then I think Fordham is the answer.

Congrats on getting into both schools.

Take your time. Visit both campuses again, during Orientation. Best of luck to you.

Holy Cross has one of the highest alumni giving rates, greater endowment per student, and a strong emphasis on Liberal Arts.

go to fordham!!! i went to holy cross. you are stranded in worcester (no great shakes), and you will spend all of your time on a small (albeit beautiful) campus. there is little exposure to life outside the campus grounds. boston may be 46 miles away, but it may as well be on another planet for all the times you will go there. at least fordham offers student transportation to manhattan. honestly, i lived it, - “hands down”, fordham.

^ HC offers transportation to boston hchchc same as Fordahm… Fordham is no “great shakes” either…have you been to the area surrounding Fordham? BEN10–please dismiss “hchchc” posts for today–hes in bad mood ;)

haha yeah, i don’t go to holy cross…but my sister does. and every time i’ve visited, we’ve taken the shuttle somewhere. i’ve been to boston twice and providence once. and there’s always things going on in campus

^ don’t mind “hchchc” I did some detective work and noticed he just joined today to “bash” HC. Hmmmm…I’m thinking a student who didn’t gain acceptance? Just a hunch!!

just replying, although 3 months late… no rejection letter in our family here - no applicants in fact… just stating my opinion. my only child had no interest in holy cross. i assume that’s okay??

This is also months late, but on another thread you said you were a HC alum http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-holy-cross/893167-holy-cross-northeastern.html

“i’m a holy cross grad - it is not demanding academically. if you want to teach or go into psych, go to northeastern - more practical exposure. no brainer.”

Maybe you don’t include yourself in the term “family.” You seem to have it out for HC despite your name hchchc… why may I ask?

These are very different schools. One is in New York, while the other is in Worcester. You’ll have a very different experience depending on which you city you live in.

Holy Cross is also a small liberal arts college, while Fordham is a national university.

You should really visit each to decide. While technically peer schools, they are very different in terms of atmosphere.

Newsweek ranks HC as among the top 25 most rigorous colleges and universities, ahead of Yale and Stanford. No other Jesuit colleges, Catholic colleges, or Patriot League schools made top 25.

Worcester is considered the New York City of central Massachusetts. The Bronx:Manhattan::Worcester:Boston, so it’s sort of a tossup.
