Fordham or Sarah Lawrence?

My D's been accepted to both, for Fall 2008. But Math is her Waterloo. Where would it be tougher for her — as far as Math is concerned? She will be in the Liberal Arts program.

I can't speak about the math programs at each college, but I can tell you that Sarah Lawrence is infamous for it's writing/English program and for students who want a career in journalism. Sarah Lawrence also has a larger number of females on campus and a small number of males. Fordham is closer to 50/50 for males & females.

Thanks for the response, NYmama. But what do you mean by "infamous for its writing/English program?"

definition of infamous:
ill-famed: having an exceedingly bad reputation

but i think she chose the wrong words and meant to praise the program

Thank you, MRocKEd.
But what about you, would you know anything about the math requirements between the two schools?
Thanks.

Ooooh, that should be "famous" not infamous....sorry for that! They have a renowned writing program - that should be the right word! :)

No problem there, NYmama. Thanks for the response, too.

i only took Calc II in Fordham, and it was fairly difficult, and this is coming from someone that took the course in high school and scored a 5 on the AP.

I think the most difficult part about it was the fact that the explanations of theories varied from HS to college, and it kind of threw me off a little.

Oh, and one other thing, if your D goes to FU, and majors in math, there is the high probability that her major classes will be very small.

Thanks, ilya. There's no way she'll major in Math, that's too funny for us to even think about. She's almost math dsylexic, if there's such a thing. I'm referring to the basic math requirement that's needed in the core curriculum course.

<a href="http://www.fordham.edu/academics/colleges__graduate_s/undergraduate_colleg/fordham_college_at_r/core_curriculum/index.asp%5B/url%5D">http://www.fordham.edu/academics/colleges__graduate_s/undergraduate_colleg/fordham_college_at_r/core_curriculum/index.asp</a></p>

That's the curriculum at Fordham College I believe. I'm in CBA so I wouldn't know exactly. Plus I like math. Seems like FC students just have to take one course in math. Normally I think students will take Finite Math. I honestly, would not choose a school based on which one had an easier (or tougher) math requirement for her. There will always be one or two courses she'll struggle through. It's all part of the experience I'd say. For example, I used to love history. After taking it at Fordham, I absolutely hate it. In fact, I've been postponing my second requirement for it. If anything, just tell your daughter to wait til she takes her math requirement if it bothers her that much. Let her get used to scheduling herself that first year. Then she can plan accordingly what class she will take in a semester and set it so that the non-math courses are easier to handle and she can spend more time focusing on the math to get a good grade in it.

what are the core requirements for CBA>?

here's the typical program at cba. <a href="http://www.fordham.edu/cba/curriculum/typicalprogram.htm%5B/url%5D">http://www.fordham.edu/cba/curriculum/typicalprogram.htm</a></p>

there's 2 math classes. 2 stats classes. and well the other business classes are going to have some math to them such as finance but you can mess around with excel in some of those classes so it may not be as bad.

Thank you, BP-TheGuy88. What a name to write down in the dark. Seriously, thanks for the link.
