Fordham Road Station/Subway?

I'm visiting Fordham soon and will be taking the train. Specifically this one, I think?
"Take the MetroNorth Commuter Railroad to the Fordham Road Station stop. Exit left out of the train station. The Fordham University Third Avenue gate will be a few steps ahead of you, on your left."

Will it be easy to find the MetroNorth Commuter Train from Grand Central? I tried finding schedules online but I'm having so many issues...
(I live in NJ.) How far is the Fordham Road station from the actual college? I'm nervous about walking alone in the Bronx.

Also, does anyone know anything about the D subway line that stops at the Grand Concourse a "few blocks away" ? How many blocks is a few blocks? Because once again, I'm nervous because I'll be alone.

lol the Bronx isn’t that bad. the station is like right next to the uni and the D train is like 4-5 (long-ish) blocks away. it’ll take you about 5-10 min to walk to get to it. um,i’m not too sure about the metronorth stuff since i’ve never taken it. lol i’m not from fordham uni,but i used to live in the area sorta. well,i was closer to the yankee stadium. i did shop on fordham road alot. :)

You are going to need to take the Harlem line - specifically, the North White Plains local. It is a few stops up the line, “Fordham.”

Edit: Don’t take the subway - don’t bother with the grand concourse. Grand Central is verrry easy to navigate. Walk in, go to one of the screens (they are generally in the middle of an entrance; if not, just walk all the way in turn and look above where the tickets are), find the North White Plains local one (runs about every half an hour or so), purchase a ticket, and go to the track number. Walk over to said track. The train leaves the minute it is scheduled to go - it won’t wait for anyone.

You do not buy a ticket for a specific time. Rather, the ticket is good for six months. So, in the event that you do miss the train, wait for the next one. You’ll be able to board with your ticket. (You don’t need a ticket to board; the ticket guy (ticketmaster?) goes through everyone while on the train sometime during the ride.)

I agree with Monoclide, go to Grand Central and take Metro-North. Make sure you get on a local train. The stops are usually listed on a board located right before the train platform, so just make sure you see Fordham listed as a stop. The train lets you off steps away from campus. I took the train my first visit to Fordham and got there no problem. Good luck.

99% of Fordham kids who go into the city take the MetroNorth. Its a very busy station. Some kids use the subway D train to Lincoln Center or take the Ramvan to Lincoln Center but they are exceptions. Take the MetroNorth. Its clean, safe, well lit and has conductors on board. Fordham Road is clearly stated as a stop on local trains (not express trains to Connecticut or Westchester). Its a short 15 minute ride. It runs until 130am by the way. We love to stay at the Grand Hyatt above Grand Central Terminal when we are in town, and just drop down to the MetroNorth to get back and forth to Fordham Rose Hill. Fabulous place.

When you get off the train, go up the metal steps and you will see the University across the street. Simply cross the street and you are at the main gate for the rear of the campus by Walsh Library. Bring your id with you, as the gate is manned and requires ID to get in. If you miss that stop, don’t fret. The next stop is the New York Botanical Gardens on the north side of campus and you simply get off there and walk down Southern Blvd to the main Fordham entrance.

The Fordham Road train station to buy tickets or return to Manhattan is on the same side of the road as campus. You can also buy tickets to go up to Westchester for shopping, or if you desire to go up to Connecticut for some reason.

Good luck. Welcome to Fordham!

Don’t be nervous, it is easier than it sounds. When you come out of the train station there is a busy street. Look across and there are a bunch of big brick buildings, and some construction. That is the school. There is a gate there, but when we visited we were not allowed to use it,as we were not FU students. We had to walk up the hill to the next block, where there is a main gate, that cars can enter too. The gaurd there will show you where you need to go.

The guard did let us in that gate when we visited. We showed him a copy of a confirmation saying we were going to an information session at that time and he was very nice. I would bring a confirmation or something from Fordham along with you.

Eileen, when you get to Grand Central, go to the main Concourse. There is an information booth with Metro North employees in the middle of the concourse if you are not able to figure out the train schedule, but it is easy. Just look up over the ticket booths and the trains, times and tracks are listed. As stated above, your train is on the Harlem line, the local to North White Plains, which stops at Fordham Road. The track will either be on the main concourse or down stairs Just look for the track number signs.

There are kiosks (credit card only) and tickets booths (cash or credit) at Grand Central to purchase your round trip ticket. Don’t purchase it on the train because it will cost more.

Metro North is a great ride and very, very safe and reliable.
