ghostbuster --thanks for your words or encouragement. Add to the top of the list that i love the City and love the Yankees with a passion. I plan on attending the April admitted students session. The school did offer a scholarship of $8K and $8K in need based grant. That is encouraging too. We’ll see. Again, thanks.
Starbury – you graduated – what major? What are you doing now?

One of my roommates was from Baltimore, MD. He loved his experience at Fordham and NYC. I think you should try to use your offer from UMD as leverage so that Fordham can increase its offer. I think it’ll be a different experience attending a private school in NYC from attending a in-state school, with all due respect to UMD.

Also, why did you apply to Gallatin? I wouldn’t waste money on it.

I graduated with a degree in accounting. Working for an accounting firm/studying for the CPA exam. I’d say 90% of the accounting students get a job offer; they have a very strong accounting program.

Fordham is very stingy with the scholarship. I had a 1350 on the SAT when I applied back in 2005, but received only $4,200 in scholarship (but your class is definitely strong than ours was). Fordham has gone from being ranked at 80 to 61 (up 29 spots in 5 years), their applications have doubled (go on the Fordham website to check it out - your year seems to be the most competitive with 27,400 applications - a 14 % jump from last year), and the SAT average has gone up nearly 100 points. It’s a very good time to be at the school. They will be spending an astounding $1.3 billion on renovating and creating multiple new buildings on the Manhattan campus, and they are renovating the Rose Hill (bronx) campus as we speak with new residence halls. There will also be a new student center/dining hall in the coming years.

All in all $16,000 isn’t bad. Tuition is $36,000 and room and board is like another $8,000, so you’re looking at $28,000. See if you can get more out of them when you visit the campus in April by using your UMD offer as leverage. Maybe you can get another $5,000 out of them.

Your tuition figures are off - the letter we received from Fordham offering my d a small grant listed tuition, room and board at $53K and change. So 16k isn’t too much of a dent.

Starbury – Like the idea of negotiation. fyi – tuition is $36, but room and board is $14.5K, not $8K. Total cost of attendance is $53,1K per Fordham’s FA award letter.
I like small classes, liberal arts education and I like urban – that’s why I applied to Gallatin. It’'s an interesting program featuring individualized study, concentration mot majors, etc. Much like the small liberal arts experience.
side note – Fordham needs to invest in its b’ball program – they are like the rest of NYC hoops – down and in need of an overhaul – Knicks, St. John’s.

My tuition figures aren’t off. Maybe the room and board have gotten a lot more expensive. My brother attends right now and we’re paying $36,000 in tuition. My brother didn’t get any financial aid nor did I get any financial aid back when I attended, but tuition and room and board were a lot cheaper a few years back. We could have gone to a state school but it’s a fine institution so we don’t mind spending the money for it. You get what you pay for.

Blueish,

Sorry about being off on the room/board numbers. That’s pretty expensive but I think it includes food if I am not mistaken. The cafeteria is pretty bad so you’ll probably have to spend even more out of pocket for food.

You should have no problem getting into Gallatin. My cousin attends Stern and he makes fun of Gallatin all the time. And I think the degree is in individualized study with a concentration of your choice. But I’m sure its a great program if it suits your needs/wants.

I agree 100% with you on Fordham needing to invest in its basketball program. They need a new arena but they aren’t willing to spend $60-70 million on it. They are in a midst of a $500 million campaign which is focused solely on academics (more scholarships, endowed faculty, facilities, etc). I am a huge basketball fan so nothing hurts me more than to see their basketball program down (just watched them lose another game a few hours ago). All of NY basketball needs a revival (including the Nets who will be in Brooklyn).

omg – I forgot about the woeful Nets! They make the Knicks look like champs!
Down here – the college hoops are great – G’town and U MD are solid and probably both going to the big dance. Hockey is hot with the Caps winning 14 straight – close to an NHL record.

Yup that’s true all the sports are doing well down there except ofcourse the Wizards. Gilbert Arenas is a dumba$$.

Fordham basketball is looking to turn it around though. They have some nice pieces with Chris Gaston (ranked one of the top 5 freshmen in the country) and we have a strong class coming in next year. And we have a young and energetic coach (interim) in Jared Grasso (youngest coach in the D-1 at 29). Let’s see - we’re in a very good conference (A-10) as is St. John’s (Big East), so you need to have a firm commitment to your program if you want to succeed.

woooooohhhh I just got accepted today!

Wonderful! Congratulations to you.

Congratulations robbie. I think you got one of those early letters, which some call likely letters in some schools. Fordham sends out letters to highly qualified students like you. (I saw your stats on other threads, since you didnt post them here). I don’t know where Fordham is on your list of schools you want to attend (or not). But just want to let you know its a great school with plenty of academic challenge, a great campus at Rose Hill (if that is where you were admitted). Fordham clearly wants you, thus the early notification. I think that also bodes well for scholarship possibilities as well, if they haven’t already offered one to you.

The stats of Fordham students have risen as the number of applications to Fordham have risen the last 5 years or so.

We hope you select Fordham, but in the meantime, be sure and attend the accepted student orientation for RD students in April. Its a very good presentation and you can meet students, faculty and administrators and see for yourself.

Congrats roaritsrobbie. Let me know if you have any questions about anything.
