Congrats to everyone that was accepted!
Fordham Alum 08

Have any regular admission candidates heard anything besides those people with great stats who have received a letter.

Did you apply regular admission?

Accepted! Although, I’m anxious about scholarships and financial aid as I still haven’t heard anything about it, but when I called, they said that I would hear along with all regular decision applicants about any scholarships, if I should get any. I was wondering if anyone else heard about scholarships??

I’m extremely thrilled that I was accepted. I think that my GPA helped me get in, as well as my hectic schedule as a trainee for a professional ballet company balanced with school. I also wrote a unique essay about my parents having a baby during my senior year; so I feel like such a topic helped my application stand out a bit.

Whopper8 - Congrats!! Hope you don’t mind a few questions. Did you apply for the BFA program with Ailey? When/where did you audition? Did you receive a letter or an email? My D is hoping to be accepted into the Fordham/Ailey program so any info would be appreciated. Congrats again!

No problem reenieg!

I did apply to the Fordham/Ailey BFA program. I auditioned in L.A on January 30th. I received a letter in a thin envelope saying that they were going to send me the official offer of admission in a few weeks, but that they just wanted to notify me of my acceptance and “reduce the stress of waiting.”
Hope your daughter finds out good news soon and if you have any other specific questions I can try and answer them.
Good luck to everyone else that auditioned!

This may be an odd comparison but so far I have received acceptances from two very different out of state schools Fordham and Penn State. I see pros and cons to both.

Which would you think has the better academic reputation, preparation for graduate school?

Its not an odd question. But they are very different schools, as you likely know. PennState is a great school and people love it there, but its just HUGE. You can do well there, if you are disciplined and avoid the crazy party people of which there are gazillions. Some good programs, however.

Fordham has some party animals but mostly its an academic school, small campus and small student body.

Getting into graduate school is a tough thing to do, particularly since many are downsizing due to funding and economics. It depends on your gpa, class rank, GRE, and what programs you are applying for and what connections you have with professors. It can be political at some schools.

Fordham has good connections at many prestigious schools, plus Fordham’s own graduate school programs are highly regarded.

Thanks Ghostbuster! I’ve heard that Penn State has a strong alumni network especially on the East Coast making it easier to get jobs so having Penn State on your resume might be helpful, but I wasn’t sure about Fordham’s reputation since I am from California where most people focus on Ivy’s or UC’s. The only people that seem to know much about these two schools are people from the East Coast…

Fordham has a growing national reputation, and received 27,000 applications this admissions season. It has a strong contingent and following in California, mostly from Catholic schools out there.

Once you visit and see the Rose Hill campus, you will understand why Fordham is so beloved and so popular.

Do you think Fordham is more reputable than Penn State on the East coast? My goal is to someday go to Columbia. I plan to either go to Law School or med school for Psychiatry. What do you think of Fordham’s law school?

Still waiting for decisions from UC’s as well… What do you think?

I do plan on attending the Spring Preview in April! Can’t wait!

First of all, if you are accepted at Fordham, congratulations! Its going to blow you away.

Second, Fordham’s Law school is ranked in the top 30 in the nation. You can google law school rankings and several sources will pop up. Its highly respected.

Third, Fordham has amazing connections to Columbia and other top tier graduate programs in many fields and Fordham students do very well on grad school applications generally. The caveat is the economy, the area of study and how well you have done in undergraduate school.

I am not inclined to pit one school against another. Every school has its own pluses and minuses and every student is different in what they are looking for etc. With PennState and Fordham they are vastly different and thus you will have a good comparison. My guess is you will like one or the other and that will be where you should go.

What Fordham offers is a special Jesuit education in the heart of New York. Its a gorgeous campus (Rose Hill) Its academically very rigorous. Its highly regarded and Fordham kids get awesome internships. (My D has one right now and its amazing.) You will write a lot of papers at Fordham. But you will also have a lot of fun. Fordham faculty know their students and care about them, mentor them, and help them in many areas. Fordham offers plenty of clubs to join, a wonderful Campus Ministry complete with awesome retreats at property they own a few hours away on the foothills of the Catskills. You have New York at your beckon. You have Little Italy on Arthur Ave, which offers authentic and awesome Italian cuisine, groceries and “culture”. The Metro North train on the New Haven Line to Westchester stops at Fordham’s gate, which you pick up at Grand Central Terminal. (Don’t take the subway…that is more of a hassle and a longer walk to campus). You have the Bronx Zoo and the New York Botanical Gardens just outside Fordham’s main entrance. You have a classic gothic campus with amazing dorms (lots of variety), sports complex, football stadium right there. Its the best of both worlds.

Of course, PennState is so huge and such a sports powerhouse, its hard to beat on that level. It enjoys a very good reputation academically. It draws mostly from Pennsylvania, and some surrounding states. But in general, its not a New York kinda place. Fordham has it beat there. If New York is what you want to do, then Fordham is your place. Fordham’s motto is “New York is my campus, Fordham is my school.”

Fordham students are close knit and stick together. They go into the city together…on weekends and Wednesdays (very few classes on Wednesday). You won’t be a number at Fordham. My D communicates with professors, eats with them sometimes and remains friends even when the course is over. Several have mentored her on several areas of interest/concern. One professor was extremely helpful Freshman year helping her adjust in the gray skies of January and February.

You might see Fr. McShane, S.J., Fordham’s President at the April Preview…in fact, he usually gives a really good closing speech in the Rose Hill Gym, our venerable classic basketball venue. (Dont ask about our record…ugh!) And if he talks to you, he will likely remember your name later. Its that kind of place.

Is it perfect? No. No school is perfect. The honeymoon always wears off eventually. Usually around Thanksgiving when papers are due, exams are setting in and dorm drama reaches its highest levels! Keep a sense of humor, a good disciplined schedule, and make good friends with similar values and you will be fine.

The kids who blow out at Fordham tend to be the slackers and party animals. (That is true at most colleges.)

Kids complain about the cafeteria food, but that is the national pasttime at most colleges. I find the cafeteria to be fine…some stuff is better than others, but overall its fine. Besides, you have so many choices in New York…and lots of kids order Pizza or Chinese to the dorms anyway.

Only you can decide if New York or Fordham is for you. We can’t compete with the UC’s on cost or weather. But you won’t be just another UC graduate among tens of thousands, you will have a transformational experience at Fordham, and when you look for jobs and internships, people respect Fordham immensely. Its fun to be different.

Fordham draws primarily from New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. But increasingly it has students from California, Texas, the South, Midwest/Lakes area, and upper Northeast. Its a VERY diverse campus. It will be an adjustment for you, but a GROWTH experience.

We are not New Yorkers. My D is doing exceptionally well and now struts around New York like someone who has been there all her life.

Does that help you?

This really does help! Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions!

I feel very fortunate to have been accepted! New York has been my number one choice all along and Fordham seems to be the right fit for me. Next hope is for a good financial aid package and I will probably be there!

Thank you again Ghostbuster!

Decision: Accepted

Personal Statement: While my grades and test scores are on the upper end of average, i think taking the rigorous IB diploma, good recs, good essay, being an international student and a good audition got me into the college :)

My kid got accepted with “full ride” offer. 4.2 (weighted), 2240 SAT. Had applied ED Columbia and rejected. Has had several (like 7) schools phoning/mailing offering full ride scholarships. Likes Fordham but not (at all) first choice. Legacy (dad). Sorta Catholic.

So now we are waiting to hear from where else will accept. Tulane already offered a lot (but not “full ride”) which is of major interest. But what if other “dream” schools come through? (Penn, Northwestern, Johns Hopkins), though was wait listed at Wash U yesterday. Dunno. Hard to turn it down. ESPECIALLY since the heartbreak was NOT getting into Columbia. So maybe Fordham? LOVES New York and dad is SO in favor of Fordham. Hard to turn it down. But at the high school almost everyone goes to US News top 20 schools and kid feels a little put out about this. But 20 years from now will it matter? And if Fordham is trying to boost their way up the US News rankings buy buying up, well, so what? Dunno. I have no good answer. We will see what the next couple of weeks bring… Yech. I’m ready for this to be over.
