There is no such thing as a stupid question; however, there is such thing as a question that has been asked (and answered) a million times before. Please do a search before asking questions.
I’m very happy to answer questions from prospective students about the culture, classes, campus, social life, etc.
Can you please tell me a little about percentage of men vs women in Gabelli? Also would you consider it super competitive for admission as compared to the other schools at Fordham in terms of acceptance?
do you know if you are admitted at rose hill if you could eventually dorm at lincoln center? my hope is to room for the first two or three years at rose hill to get the true college experience then dorm at lincoln center for my senior year once i start doing more internships and stuff in manhattan
also do you know if freshman are able to internships/how good the internship office is at finding internships for students?
@EFEves In general, there are more men in each class than women, just like probably any business school. However, I can tell you that there are quite a few women in each business class. I would like to say maybe 30%-40%. Fordham, in general, is 58% female and you will have to take core classes, so there will be many classes that you are in with more women than men. I have never seen any sexism at the school, either directed to individuals or systematically. There is a cool club called Smart Women Securities on campus. I have had about 50% female professors at Fordham.
I believe that Gabelli is the most competitive, but I find it hard to believe that the acceptance rate is significantly less than the 45% overall Fordham acceptance rate. I wouldn’t worry yourself about this. Also, many students transfer in from the liberal arts school.
@welcometonyc Are you thinking about Gabelli? If so, then I think it would be extremely hard to transfer since each school has its own programs. For example, Lincoln Center only offers global business. So, if you want to be a finance or marketing major, you have to stay at Rose Hill. I’m not sure about other colleges. I know that quite a few students elect to take a class or two at Lincoln Center while remaining a Rose Hill student.
Regardless of your major, I would bet you that most students who say that they plan to transfer to Lincoln Center don’t. I’m 100% serious. You will fall in love with Rose Hill, and forget that you ever wanted to transfer. By the time you are a junior or senior, transferring will be the last thing on your mind. Trust me–You will be thinking about your job and getting out into the real world.
Regarding internships, most people get internships in their sophomore year. I know people who intern and get jobs at Goldman, JP Morgan, Morgan Stanley, Bloomberg, etc. We are actually a target school for Goldman now.
Question: my daughter is admitted for this fall, currently deciding between Fordham and GW. She will be studying Interdisciplinary Math and Economics in Fordham college (not Gabelli) at Rose Hill. She likes the coursework and flexibility of this major. I am wondering if not being in Gabelli will limit/hinder her internship choices? Theoretically she should be able to do any of the internships you posted about. Any thoughts on this? Thanks!!!
@Njmom8. Congratulations to your daughter! How exciting for her! I’m a very honest person, I will give my honest perspective here. Hopefully, this will help provide more context than what an admissions officer or book says. It’s great that she likes the major; however, she won’t take major classes until her junior year, so there is tons of potential for her to change majors or transfer into Gabelli. Let’s say that she finds out that she is super interested in using economics and math in the corporate arena. I believe that it would be possible for her to transfer into Gabelli. I don’t mean to say that Gabelli is superior or something, just that she will have tons of options if she decides to come here.
How important is location for her and what is her end goal? NYC, as I see it, = finance, business, strategy. Washington DC = government functions, international non-governmental agencies, etc. Does she value exploring a new area? I see that you are from NJ.
Georgetown is a better school than Fordham, no doubt about it. I’m not sure, however, how the math&econ departments compare at each school.
Fordham has this great platform for internships that they implemented this year. I actually found my full-time job on the platform. In the past, Gabelli students definitely had a leg-up compared to Rose Hill students because we had a different platform. Now that the platforms are combined, I think that it is much easier for Rose Hill students to get great opportunities. The advising center is great and open to both Gabelli and Rose Hill students. Like I mentioned, her end goals are important. Quite frankly, Morgan Stanley/Goldman/JP Morgan/etc come to Gabelli. That’s where that sort of action is at. My prediction, however, is that over the next four years there will be a shifting emphasis to mathematics and computer science recruiting (both Rose Hill) because of changes in the industry.
Take a look at the starting salaries at each school. Search “Undergraduate Placement Report - Class of 2016.” They should have a breakdown of Gabelli V. mathematics. It’s just a fact of life that the median starting salary for Rose Hill is 40k, while Gabelli is 60K. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing for your daughter, it’s just something to consider.
Please excuse the extreme brevity. I’ve got a bunch of school work to do right now.
@happy1, Thank you for correcting me. I appreciate it. Sorry, I read the poster’s question too quickly. George Washington is also a very good school. The poster’s daughter should consider whether attending a Jesuit institution is important since George Washington is not a Jesuit school and Fordham is. The same comments I made above regarding location still apply.
@atp1234 Thank you for your thoughtful reply. She is torn, certainly. She agrees with you on the path of IR vs finance at GW vs Fordham. We spent time living in DC as a family, so she is very familiar with both NYC and DC. Decision making time!!! Either choice is great and exciting. Enjoy the college years- they certainly go fast!!!
Hi I just got accepted as a transfer student in Rose Hill, to study a Business major. I’m still a bit worried about having a hard time to make friends and integrating well in the community as a transfer. What do you suggest for a new transfer student to do in order to integrate well? They also gave me the option of being part of the Integrative Global Business society where the people live together in the same floor and have to attend several meetings, but I dk if the people there will be too hard working and only focused on studies, or maybe I’m wrong. Do you know anything about this group? Thank you and hope you can help me!
My other question is related to social life and party scene: Are there parties at Rose Hill? And if there are, are they fun or do people prefer to go to the city? Overall, is Fordham fun?
