Hi,
I am currently going into my senior year and I have had Fordham on my college list for quite some time. I have visited twice and I loved it both times and I would be planning on applying there if it weren’t for one thing.
Because Fordham is a Jesuit/Catholic school, is it also politically more right-leaning/conservative? I’m a gay girl myself, and I was wondering if I would run into any issues with the school being Catholic because I’m a lesbian. Also, are there many gay people on campus, particularly gay women? I would just like to know for dating purposes/having the community aspect there as I don’t want to be one of the only gay people on campus. I also want to feel accepted by my peers, which is why I would like a good sized gay community as well as the straight students to be open and comfortable with LGBTQ+ people.
Thank you!
Hello! I’m currently going into Fordham and I have to say the community built there is extremely accepting. There is actually a club attributed to the LGBTQ+ community and they even had a march for the community as well. A lot of religious people actually love and are even a part of the community Good luck in your college search!
Hi! I am going to to be a freshman at Fordham this year. I did a lot of research on the politics before applying to Fordham and from what I have seen and heard it is a very open minded school. While it may have some conservative and moderate students, it is still definitely a more left-leaning school (I mean it’s literally in AOC’s district). Good luck with the college process!
Would you mind me asking you more questions regarding Fordham once the school year starts? I’ve visited the school twice but I didn’t have the chance to talk to any students on my tour except for my tour guide.
Hey! Another current student. Lincoln Center especially is very very liberal, I’ve never heard anything remotely homophobic from the students or the administration. Even Campus Ministry is very accepting. There are queer faith groups and they’ve had James Martin come talk quite a few times, who’s a Jesuit advocate for LGBTQ+ inclusion in the Church. If anything, the anachronistic guest policy is preferential towards LGBT students, since it’s so hard to get guest passes for guests of the opposite gender. Let me know if you want any specifics!
Just an anecdote: one of my nieces, who graduated from Fordham six or seven years ago, met her wife there as an undergrad. One was at Lincoln Center, the other at Rose Hill. I don’t know how much dating either of them did while students there, so can’t speak to the overall dating pool; but LGBTQ acceptance should not be an issue.
@curiositysquared Hi there do you think you could tell me anything about Rose Hill? I prefer the Rose Hill campus to the Lincoln Center campus, but I’ve heard it’s more right-leaning.
@lauragpp I only really know RH through campus ministry and that group of students is very left leaning - there’s even an LGBTQ+ retreat and a delegation goes to IgnatianQ, the LGBTQ+ Jesuit conference. Across the board, there are definitely pockets of more conservative students at RH, who you can probably read headlines about, but it seems to me like it’s still pretty liberal, just not as out there as a Manhattan school like Fordham LC or NYU or the New School.
