Hey, so I have to make my college decision today but I'm still 50-50 on where I should go. I just want your opinion so I'll give you pros-cons for each

Fordham University Pros:
1) Easier, less work
2) In the Bronx but is right next to NYC
3) Good business program + Good liberal arts in case business doesn't work out for me
4) Can still keep in touch with my friends in NY

Fordham University Cons:
1) No dorming - harder to meet new people
2) Living off-campus with my brother or with my brother and dad
3) Terrible food
4) Average facilities

Babson College Pros
1) Great business program
2) Fantastic food
3) Good facilities
4) Dorming
5) Small school to my liking
6) New experience overall

Babson College Cons
1) Away from all my family and friends
2) Workload is said to be very tough and competitive
3) Grade deflation supposedly (very hard to get A's)
4) Average freshman GPA is 2.7 so it'll be hard to transfer out
5) Bad liberal arts so I have to do business or else....

The prices are pretty much similar: Fordham 11K vs Babson 8K

So let me know what you all think on where I should go. Thanks.

My S is very happy at Fordham’s business school (and by the way, I wouldn’t call Fordham an “easy” school, in fact it has a reputation for some grade deflation) and if you read my posts you will find that I am a big fan of the school. I think in the end the two big questions are: (1) do you want to live away from home for college? and (2) do you want to study business?

In all honesty, I believe that going away to college provides a once-in-a-lifetime learning and growth experience. I think my son’s time at Fordham would have been much less fulfilling if he did not live on campus. The concern with Babson for you seems to be the fact that you don’t seem 100% set on business. (My son ultimately chose Fordham over Bentley for that reason.) While I personally would go to Babson to get a residential college experience, you have to do what feels right to you. Nobody can or should make this decision but you and your family.

You can’t make a bad choice with two such great schools. Good luck whatever you do.

I am going to be a freshman at Fordham RH this fall, and am EXTREMELY excited. That said, I am dorming and have a very nice scholarship.

Had I been in your position, I would have chosen Babson in a heartbeat. Dorming really makes a college experience…you won’t even be able to host parties if you’re living with family members! A new experience is crucial if you’re going to live after college! Also, nice facilities are a huge plus, and a smaller school will give you personal attention.

You WANT to be challenged in college. This is the time when you learn life skills, and how to get work done under pressure. Easy is never good.

It sounds like if you go to Babson and decide that business isn’t for you, you’re screwed. However…it doesn’t really matter what you major in anymore for undergrad…you can go to law school with a degree in chemistry if you wanted to. I think that having business and administration skills will help you in any career.

Also…a $3000 difference isn’t anything to sneeze at ;)

Of course, these are just my opinions. I hope you make up your mind by the end of today!

I don’t know anything about Babson and I don’t know a lot about RH/business…my S is at LC…BUT when I read your post and your lists, I thought to myself this kid really wants to go to Babson but is a little unsure of him or herself. And that is totally understandable, going away to college is a major life change. So are you ready for it? I think you probably are or you wouldn’t have applied.

So then the question becomes how sure are you about the business major? And ultimately, which is more important to you the residential college experience or a strong liberal arts program within the same university should you decide to switch?

Finally, re your Fordham pros…easier, less work? Don’t even THINK that you won’t be swamped with assignments and work your butt off for an A!

Damn I’ve been deliberating this for weeks and today I decided on Fordham. But after reading these posts, I’m becoming skeptical about whether or not I’m making the right decision. The deadline for Babson’s deposit passed on May 1st and even the Dean of Undergraduate admissions have been in contact with me about allowing me to pay the late deposit which is really nice of him but I still don’t know what to do. Oh man =/

^^^If you have made your decision today and it is Fordham then DO NOT LOOK BACK!!! Welcome to the Fordham family! Study hard and enjoy the next 4 years! :)

Yeah after much thought I decided to go to Fordham. Babson was tempting esp. cuz of the rich, new experience but I guess I caved in because of the enormous amount of work (I know Fordham has alot too but from what I heard, it won’t be as intense as Babson). Also, what I loved about Babson was how the Dean of Undergraduate admission kept in touch with me the past few days about extending the May 1st deposit deadline for me which he did so I appreciated that alot. But ultimately, whether or not I chose Babson or Fordham, I would’ve loved either choice but now I am proud to say I am a Fordham Ram. Thank you guys and who knows, maybe we might be in touch with each other.

So I got into Fordham University (Rose Hill) with an early action decision. My overall transcript GPA was a 90.85 (our school does it out of a 100) and my overall 1st term senior year average was a 93.2. So basically, when 2nd term senior year started, my average so far for the 2nd marking period is like an 85.2. The reason for this isn’t Senioritis, because I’ve been following the same routine meaning that I still work and am not lazy. Problem is my English class got a lot harder (I had a 90 1st term but now it’s a 75, currently for 2nd term MP2). Also I got a completely different subject class (Digital Electronics) and I’ve been struggling. I got an 80 last mp but now I’ve done bad in a lot of quizzes so it’s going to get lower. Plus, last term I had AP Economics which was a weighted 90 (equals 99) but the class isn’t an AP anymore this term so it doesn’t get weighted into the avg as much.So am I in serious jeopardy of having my college acceptance at Fordham University rescinded? If I’m not, I got the Jogues Scholarship and so would that be in jeopardy too and if they take it out, would they give me the Commuter’s Grant that they said they would give me had I not had the Joges Scholarship? I’m like mad nervous because if they do, then that essentially means I can’t go into any college next year…

P.S. I’m not like failing any classes but my grades for each class are like 75, 85, 80, and a 90…no failing grades like <= 65.

Unless the admissions department is actively looking for trouble, you’ll be fine. The girl (she was pretty young) who interviewed me for Cornell mentioned that she got a “D” in her English class the last semester of high school, and Cornell couldn’t have cared less!

Hey thanks for the response guys! Good to see that hopefully things will turn out for the better for me even though I am NOT slacking at all. I know this is off-topic but I remember that I wanted to apply to NYU but when I saw that we had to write extra essays and that the tuition was high, I didn’t bother to apply for it. Months later, I learn that a friend of mine who had nearly the exact same grades as me got into NYU via HEOP and now I’m thinking man, did I screw myself. So I was wondering would it be possible to transfer next year to NYU via HEOP? And if so, how difficult is it to transfer? Thanks!

~ As for the poster who asked about my SAT grades, I’ll just give you an overview of my stats and activities; accepted to Fordham via EA btw:

Weighted GPA: 90.85 (out of 100)
SAT Score: 1900 (M: 710, CR: 580, W: 610)
SAT II: Math I (670)
Classes: Took about 5 APs and some honors classes; Got a 1-2 on AP Euro, AP Comp Sci, AP Eng, but got a 4 on AP Calc; just took AP Eco and bombed it lol) I’m just a bad test taker unfortunately =/

Why do you keep second guessing your decision?

Fordham is a very good school and no, by not applying to NYU, you did not “screw yourself.” What has changed here except that you found out a similar student got in through the HEOP program for which you likely do not qualify? Do you think that there will not be extra essays to write or the tuition will not be high if you apply to NYU as a transfer?

There are PLENTY of students at Fordham who actually like it better than NYU. Some applied and chose Fordham over NYU for a variety of reasons, some didn’t even apply to NYU bc they didn’t like it. And btw, there are plenty of NYU students who transfer bc they discovered it wasn’t all they expected it to be.

I recommend you focus on allowing yourself to succeed and enjoy your time at Fordham rather than coming into the school planning on transferring. If that’s your goal, go to a CC. Quite frankly, the fact that you keep posting statements that indicate you are not willing to work hard academically…i.e. you think Fordham’s workload will be less intense, didn’t want to write extra essays, etc…you might want to consider going that route anyway. But if you are coming to Fordham, then come to Fordham prepared to work hard and forget about everything else. Good luck! :)

Lol @sandkmom, sry I’m a pretty undecisive guy, it took me weeks to decide whether or Fordham or Babson. I remember waking up with my mind set on one college but then it kept changing each day over and over again. But yeah, I know Fordham will be great but I was just wondering what would’ve happened had I applied to NYU because where I’m coming from, it would’ve been a much greater situation for me and my family, that’s all. And I understand why you would think I’m not willing to work hard academically, but that is def not the case. I know college will be tough and there’ll be alot of work but I’m ready for that. So yeah I’m ecstatic to be going to Fordham.

“Where is there grade deflation? Fordham is cake. I don’t know anyone - less the idiots - that doesn’t have an amazing GPA”

Here is two quotes from Monoclide on a different thread:

“I had a C+ last semester. They(NYU) still accepted me and offered transfer credit” From the context of his/her quote it would indicate the 2nd semester of the school year, now see below

“This semester is a LOT better and I have all As. I don’t even do the work in half of the classes”

Which is it all A’s or did you forget that one little “C”.

All your doing is trying to bash Fordham because you are transferring out. And, btw the condescending comment about, you didn’t know anyone that doesn’t have an amazing GPA, yet you posted that your GPA was a 3.3 …not really amazing.

I apologize for having to post this but people on CC sometimes uses this board for their own agenda!
