I just got off of Bryn Mawr’s waitlist, which I’m super stoked about. I am currently going to Fordham (Lincoln Center), but am considering losing the deposit and going to Bryn Mawr. Ever since I started the college process, I have really wanted to go to an all women’s college. However, I’ve also really wanted to go to school in NYC, and I know Fordham has access to some great internships. For reference, I’m particularly interested in English, communications, journalism, film studies, etc. If I wasn’t worried about finding a job after college, I would probably choose Bryn Mawr in a heart beat, but I’m not sure if that will get me where I want to go. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Yes, Bryn Mawr will get you where you want to go. YOU will get you where you want to go. And it is in a great location. Go and don’t look back. Congratulations!
i am not sure but believe that Bryn Mawr (nor the other colleges in its consortium) have much strength or breadth to offer re: some of your stated interests, such as journalism. If each one of those course areas you have mentioned is important to you, you should quickly check into that issue (if Fordham is a stronger choice in that respect).
@splokey did you do anything specifically that you think got you off the waitlist? is there anything i can do to increase my chances? i’m an international who asked for a lot of aid
It sounds like your heart is saying Bryn Mawr and it sounds like if you were accepted initially it probably would have been your choice – so if affordable go there.
This is probably too late, but here it goes anyway: Have you visited both? You seem to have your heart set in BMC, what are the reasons? They have very different vibes, and I think fairly different student profiles, socially speaking. BMC’s population seemed to me very “choice progressive issue oriented” (gender, etc), while Fordham’s looked more “social issue oriented” (volunteering, professor pay, etc).
There’s no “walking from BMC to NYC,” if you get my point, and even though Philadelphia is a short train ride from the campus, I suspect in the end you will get a suburbs experience there, in a Disneyland-like campus. Which is pretty good if you want to be a bookworm and/or don’t want too much party action, etc, etc.
I don’t want to dissuade you from going to BMC, but given your interests I’d think a lot about going there from Fordham. Things to think about:
- Do you know you love BMC, or do you think you will?
- Do you dislike Fordham for any reason? Were you excited about going there?
- "Future job prospects" aside, do you like quiet suburbs, or would prefer living in NYC?
- An important one, that only you can answer (and you should!): you didn't say "yes" immediately, and asked us for an opinion. What do you want to hear? :)
If you just love BMC and all that it is, I’m sure you can make it work. Think long and hard about where you would be getting the biggest smile moving in, and go there. Think about the answer you want from us, and do that.
(Background: My daughter was accepted in both, and we visited both. Fordham (Rose Hill) was a very nice surprise for me. My daughter wanted Classical Studies, so BMC was much better for her. Even with BMC’s much better Classics department, though, I would not be sad if she chose Fordham instead.)
