Son was admitted to both business schools and loves them both. Fordham is offering Dean's scholarship of greater amount than Villanova's tiny scholarship and pretty good grant. Obvi, we would be guaranteed the scholarship $ over 4 years at Fordham and Villanova's grant amount would change from year to year based on financials (and they will change as other child in college graduates). Cannot make a decision bc he is favoring Villanova but might want to chase the $ from Fordham. He views Fordham as a B+school versus Villanova as a A+. Should we bite the bullet and go for the more prestigious Villanova, while we still think the world of Fordham? I was contemplating appealing Villanova's offer and see if they would give us more grant $ but still wont solve the issue of the next 3 years. Any thoughts/advise?

Huh? I think Fordham is generally regarded as more selective.

You’re right that Villanova’s business school is more difficult to get accepted to, but it’s not B+, A+, more like B+, A-. Neither one is considered in the top 20 business schools. I think if you can afford to you need to let your child choose, if he is in love with Villanova that is probably where he belongs. When my own son was making his decisions on applying to schools as a probable business major, Villanova was one of 2 schools that he visited and didn’t like enough to apply to. I have to admit none of us were wowed, so we let him remove it from his list. They seemed to be trying to convince potential applicants that it was extremely difficult to gain admittance, but the reality is that it’s not significantly more difficult than Fordham. I think 25% of my son’s graduating class was eventually admitted there and only a few ended up attending.

Thanks for your input… much appreciated! He is so indecisive bc I don’t think he is really in love with either. These two are his top choices of all the schools he was accepted to. UVA was his #1 but did not get in Villanova is ranked #13 for business but Fordham’s proximity and NYC connections for internships/jobs is so appealing. Glad he has time… ultimately, the decision will be his. Solid scholarship from Fordham is also tugging at us.

@njshore I was in the same EXACT situation (hence my username). Denied to UVA (my #1) and was debating between Villanova and Fordham. I picked Fordham after much contemplation. Yes, Villanova is ranked #13 in BLOOMBERG. But where are they on US News & World reports? #72. And Fordham is ranked 87. But in my two majors (Marketing and Finance) Fordham is ranked 21 and 22 respectively. Look at the way each source ranks the schools and you will find US News much more effective. They are also the most trusted company that ranks things. But, rankings are not everything, just had to tell you about them since that seems to be your sons focus.

Overall I chose Fordham due to its beautiful campus, plethora of internships, and proximity to the business capital of the world, NEW YORK. I also loved that it is Jesuit and found all the people there very friendly. I LOVE NYC

Villanova is also very beautiful but the students were very rude when I was taking a tour. Also, there was a lot of internship opportunities in the city. Located in suburbs which I didn’t like either.

I also live down the shore btw (Wildwood NJ)

Honestly, just a purely mom’s perspective-- I feel safer that my kid is walking around New York City at night, than I would feel about her walking around Philly at night.

Fordham gets kids a lot of NYC internships and it is very easy to get to midtown. Metronorth stop right on campus.

njshore - honestly, this seems like a no-brainer to me. My daughter is a senior at Fordham. It has been the greatest 4 years! She has an internship in NYC. Her freshman dorm - Hughes - has been completely renovated and is now the Gabelli School of business due to a huge donation from Mario Gabelli - a Fordham grad. Every major Wall Street firm was on campus in the Fall looking for interns/hires. Fordham is offering you more money than Villanova. Internship opportunities at Fordham are amazing! Business school already has a great reputation and is on the rise - seriously - a no-brainer.

If you can make it work financially, let your son go to the school he wants to attend. Everyone will tell you how great this school is or that school is, but ultimately the most important thing is the best fit for your son and where he will be happiest, assuming you are able to afford it. Villanova is an excellent school. Fordham is an excellent school. Apples and Oranges. Where does he want to go?

Thank you all for your thoughts. Will post his decision when I know. I think you cannot go wrong with either choice and that’s why we are not pushing one school over the other. If it is VU, my husband and I will make it work financially and so the choice is totally his.

I posted this on another thread:

Allow me to cite something that might sway your decison. The Paris School of Mines does a study of the top CEOs at Fortune 500 companies every few years and ranks all the schools in the world (thousands) according to the number each places in these high business positions and lists the top 700. Below is a listing of all the US (and UK) schools on the current rankings. I have excluded all other international schools. Note where Fordham lands. This speaks well of the strength of a Fordham degree in the business world.

@RamRay Do you know where Northeastern ranks on this list?

Sorry, I did not note the American schools in the list of 700 below 349. You can go to their website and open up the PDF listing of the schools ranked.

Actually, Fordham appeared 23rd on the Mines list in the 2012 rankings, so perhaps that’s even more persuasive.

Cbataresh;

I looked it up and Northeastern is in the VERY big group all ranked 229th in the 2011 ranking, including Boston College, Boston University, NYU, Rutgers, Michigan, Vanderbilt, West Point, USAF academy, Pace, CCNY, Wake Forrest, Dayton, Wahington and Jefferson, etc.
