Fordham vs. Boston University

I'm accepted to both schools under their business programs and I can't make a decision. Which school has a better reputation, better internships, job opportunities, and chances to get into a good MBA program.

Also, which school has a more active party scene?

well as far as the overall undergrad education goes, these two are dead even in rank (tied at 56th this year) but i’m pretty sure fordham’s business program is more reputable. also there’s a lot to be said for studying business in New York City, home of Wall Street and the capital of the world. from what i’ve heard, fordham’s party scene is kind of low key (especially at the lincoln center campus but if you’re interested in gabelli school of business you’ll be at rose hill anyway) but there are several bars nearby not to mention all of New York City with its nightclubs, hotels and other colleges to party at.

I would make every effort to go the accepted student days at both schools. Pay attention to the students, the curriculum (Fordham does have a large liberal arts core), the campus, the size of the school (BU is larger), and anything else that is important to you. Hopefully one school will just feel right.

yeahh, i forgot to mention how important visiting is. like happy said, in the end its important to find a school that feels like home; especially since these are both good schools academically and in great locations. do you like boston or new york more?

thanks for the responses… I do like the idea of going to school in Boston just because of how many colleges are in the area but I’m not necessarily a fan of the spread out campus. Fordham’s campus is more traditional and nicer to look at, but it is in the Bronx. I’ve visited both schools and considering that I received about the same amount of scholarship money and they’re both essentially the same academically, I guess it comes down to where I will have more fun in the next four years. I know BU does have some frats and house parties but I’m not really sure about what students at Fordham do aside from the bar scene… any ideas?

First, most people who attend Rose Hill learn to love the Bronx even if they were slightly intimidated at first. Search the forum for posts by yenrod and sunshowers23.

Second, Boston is known as a college town but NYC has plenty of colleges, too, and I’m sure that you’ll find people with similar interests and have fun at either school.

When my S was considering, Boston College vs. Fordham, NYU last year, the deciding factor in ruling out BC was that it was in the “wrong” city. He didn’t think Boston was a “real” city given the cleanliness, small town feel compared to NYC and the fact that public transportation shut down at midnight! So if you have visited both schools and didn’t get that “this is where I belong” feeling, then consider which city you want to live in for the next four years and ultimately where you want to end up careerwise. Good luck! :)

Those rankings don’t really measure the quality of undergraduate education. From 2007 to 2010, Fordham’s “rank” has gone from #84 to #56. Due to much more competitive admissions this year, it will likely fall to a smaller number this year. However, it’s not like it was a much worse place for education a couple years ago; rather, the student experience was likely very similar between 2007 and 2010. So using rankings to decide is misguided at best.

i understand what you’re saying, rankings shouldn’t be used as the sole determining factor in any decision. they are, however, useful for vaguely forming opinions on one school’s quality compared to another based on specific criteria. it is true that these criteria are determined by the rankers and thus, may not be as important to you as other unrankable factors.

so the rankings in this case indicate that based on the measured data, the two schools are essentially on the same level. to determine what this means to you in your decision, you’d have to look at the ranking and find out what it was based on and whether those things matter to you.

But are you saying that Fordham was way worse than Boston University in 2007, but its equal in 2010, and probably its superior in 2011? The rankings are pretty much worthless in comparing anything but selectivity and temporary reputation.

Billy – I think that Fordham has always been a great school, but is now appealing to more people with more dorms, and other outreach efforts. IMHO.

Yes, I realize why the selectivity and rankings change. I am just expressing my view that they hold no intrinsic value as to the quality of an undergraduate education.

More people are drawn to Fordham now than in 2007, but it doesn’t mean the education is radically different from 2007. Even the formulas for the rankings change each year, to generate new lists and sell more magazines. It’s all a money-making business.

“Even the formulas for the rankings change each year”

exactly, all i was saying is that based on the ranking formulas, which have specific criteria, fordham has improved since 2007 to become equal to BU according to these formulas. i understand that overall quality can’t be assessed this way, i’m just saying that rankings can give one at least a general idea of how certain universities compare, based on the formulas and criteria set by the magazines which, while not including every factor that contributes to making a great undergrad experience, may be useful in the decision making process, especially if the criteria used are important to the person making the decision.

but again, i completely agree that rankings must be taken with a grain of salt so to speak and can not be considered the be all, end all method of determining how good a school is. they may, however, be used as a contributing factor in one’s own opinion of a school which is why i brought them up in the first place.

Personally, I would choose Fordham…It’s a great school with amazing opportunities for the future.

I’m not sure about the party scene but check out this website for more info:
