Fordham vs NYU Gallatin

I initially applied to Fordham as a safety school in case I didn't get into NYU, but now that I've been accepted to both I'm starting to really consider Fordham more because they gave me great financial aid. I'm also starting to worry about Gallatin's credentials, I was looking through the alumni and couldn't find anyone really notable from Gallatin. I applied to it because I'm completely undecided, but now I'm wondering if I should save my money for graduate school (got pretty much no aid from NYU). I guess what I'm really asking is: is NYU worth it it right now?

No, I’d save my money and go with Fordham.

Fordham’s a great school where you can get a great education. I know several successful graduates who were happy with their decision to attend.

It’s also got a very different vibe from Gallatin.

But I wouldn’t discount Gallatin just because they don’t have any “notable” alumni. Notability is overrated and subjective.

Would you have to take out significant loans for NYU? if so, it’s a no-brainer: go to Fordham. If it won’t be an economic strain, evaluate both schools and choose the one where you believe you will thrive.

Fordham is a great school and you will get a terrific education there. Quality professors, internship opportunities and alumni networks.

My S went to Fordham and had a wonderful experience. He is now in a top grad school in his field. I would definitely visit Fordham and give it strong consideration, especially if you want to save some money for grad school.

Thanks for the quick responses everyone! @gettinin my dad said he has some money/investment set aside that would barely get me through NYU, and that’s assuming the stocks stay stable. But that money was meant to be a startup for the rest of my life, so if I did that by the end of four years I’d have $0 to fall back on and there’d be huge pressure to get a good job during or right out of undergraduate school, and graduate school will probably have to be all loans…

As I’ve been reading up on Fordham I’ve been getting more and more impressed. It seems like it’s very respected on the east coast, no one’s heard of it down here in Texas. NYU has always been the dream school and I got a huge reaction when I got in. sigh I’m already hating adulthood -.-

Gallatin is definitely not a school for people who do not know what they want to do - I’m surprised they accepted you.

Gallatin allows a student to take vlasses from any school within NYU (for the most part), so it’s as good as whichever classes you take. It is by no means a bad program, so long as you don’t do something ‘dumb’.

It’s an excellent program for people interested in mutliple/interdisciplinary subjects. Had I known about the program, I probably would have applied to it rather than getting a double major and double minor fromCAS

^ when I say I’m undecided it just means I don’t know what major I want to commit to, not that I don’t know which direction I’m headed in. That’s the reason they accepted me. I’ve already got an internship in news broadcasting lined up so try not to assume things and only post helpful information please

If you want to get a first job in NY, or go to grad school, Fordham is definitely well respected and very well known.

if the difference in loans over 4 years is less than 20k, i’d say it’s worth it to go to nyu
