Fordham's rep and worth

Hi, I was recently accepted into LC with a major in Mathematics. I was wondering exactly how good of a school is Fordham, compared to other NY schools as well as East Coast schools. It seems nice from the research but I'd love some insight on the LC experience and exactly how good a school is Fordham and is it worth it's hefty price tag.
Thanks!!

You are in Manhattan. Enough said.

Yes I realize that and I bet its an amazing opportunity, but I just wanna know exactly how good a school Fordham is…is it worth the price of attendance? How does it compare with other schools you know? how good are job/internship prospects coming from Fordham and so forth…

I am no FCLC expert. My kid is at Rose Hill. But…students at Fordham can cross matriculate at FCRH/FCLC and take classes on both campuses and many do.

Fordham is unique. Its Jesuit. Its NYC. Its smaller than NYU and FCLC is a much more enclosed environment…its still urban, but not quite like NYU. But you have all of NYC at your beckon. Its next to Lincoln Center for Performing Arts and adjacent to Central Park. Its a great part of the city.

Fordham is not NYU or Columbia, but we hold our own academically. Fordham students get wonderful opportunities to work in New York as interns and full time work. Fordham students are prized for work ethic and personal ethics. Fordham students get prestigious fellowships such as Fulbright Scholarships, Boren Scholarships, etc. 14 last year alone! The workload is stiff but not overwhelming. Its the best of both worlds. Not cutthroat. But reasonably challenging and competitive.

Compare the price with NYU and Columbia and we are less expensive I believe. Its up to you to decide if the price of admission (and student loans) is worth it to you. For some, price is everything. For others it is not.

You get out of a school what you put into it. You dont find many kids at Fordham who are cynical and mumbling about going somewhere else. Like all colleges, you will have some kids transfer for various reasons, some of them financial, some of them because it wasnt a good fit. Go to the Admitted Student Orientation. That is key to determining if you feel like its a good fit BEFORE the drop dead date of May 1. I think you will like what you see. Plus FCLC has HUGE expansion plans for new facilities. Its on the website.

Is Holy Cross really that much better than Fordham Rose Hill for pre-med?

I was also accepted into Fordham Lincoln center and I was wondering the same thing! I will definitely be attending the orientation

The thing about med schools is they take kids from all sorts of backgrounds. I know this for a fact, having contact with an admissions officer for a major medical school. PreMed is not the only path to success. Medschools take Philosophy majors, language majors, all sorts of people. Of course those kids took the requisite math and science courses to be prepared and the MCAT. But its not a one path for all scenario. Think about that. Fordham does very well with med school applicants, for those who stick to the grind and don’t give up. Some kids change their minds midstream and opt for a different career or major.

My son was waitlisted and it his first choice. Any advice?

Hope for the best but always be prepared to be rejected.

calimass - if Fordham is truly your son’s first choice you may want to have your son write a letter/email letting Fordham admissions know it is his first choice and if accepted, he will definitely attend. Honestly, I’m not sure it will help a lot, but it can’t hurt. At least you will know you did everything you could. Until you hear back from Fordham, I’d focus on figuring out which of the schools he was accepted at will be the best fit for him. Good luck.
