Foreign Affairs at UVA

I've heard that FA is a popular major with applicants this year, so I decided to ask a few questions about it myself. Some of them are kinda stupid, but any answers are greatly appreciated :)

1) What exactly do you study in FA? I know what it is in the literal sense, but is it similar to international relations, or what?

2) What job opportunities would you have after college with a degree in FA? Would it be limited to working in DC or for an internat'l business corporation?

3) What is a common double-major with that?

4) If you wanted to go into law school, could you do it with a foreign affairs major, or would you want to do poli sci or something instead?

Thanks!!!

I'm about to graduate UVA with a double in foreign affairs and economics..

1) it's just what UVA calls international relations..the FA major is a combination of comparative politics and IR theory...it encompasses political science, history, economics, comparative area studies

2) for entry level, its more about your GPA and other EC accomplishments. Assuming a good GPA people do law school, consulting, state dept, etc

3) economics, history, languages (for whatever region you concentrate in)

4) foreign affairs at UVA is a subset of the political science dept, and is a great major for law school (very writing intensive, IR theory involves a lot of logical reasoning). Your GPA and LSAT are much more important than major, though.

good luck at uva

Wow, sounds pretty neat actually! Have you enjoyed majoring in it? Also, you don't have to re-apply for that major, right? Like as long as you're admitted to the school you can major in it? Thanks again :)

My mom was a FA major at UVA...then she went to law school.
