Foreign Affairs?

Hey all,

Does anyone have any experience with or good info about the foreign affairs program at UVa? If i go there, that will most likely be my major so just wondering what everyone thought about internship opportunities, classes, professors, etc.

Thanks!

I took several IR classes as a American Politics/Government minor. Check out the faculty here:

Look over not just the IR faculty, but the Comparative Politics faculty as well, since many have concentrations in certain regions. I had classes with Gerard Alexander and Jeff Legro. A close friend of mine took a couple classes with Lynch. Between all three, we had very good experiences. The politics courses tend to be fairly involved, particularly with reading, but the writing requirements are moderate (usually several shorter papers, or one longer one). Each of these faculty were very bright and have had a good amount of experience and research in their respective areas.

Classes tend to start off big at the 1000 level and tend to get smaller after the low 3000 level courses. However, in the large classes, I usually had some kind of discussion/recitation class 1x/week with only 20 students where you go in depth with the readings. I always had good experiences with my Government/Foreign Affairs TA’s and I stay in touch with one of my TA’s fairly regularly now via Facebook. He’s been very helpful with applying to grad schools and navigating that adventure. :)

You’ll also want to check out the history dept. at UVA (another fantastic/strong dept.) as they have a variety of professors who specialize in different regions of the world, and often there are courses that would nicely complement a foreign affairs program. Also, that dept. has some notable faculty, including Phillip Zelikow, who lead the 9/11 Commission and teaches on US foreign policy history.

I can’t really speak for internship opportunities, but each year UVA does participate in a Government/Non-profit career fair and many DC/Gov’t organizations attend this event.
