Foreign Exchanges and College Essays

Hi.
So I spent a year abroad on a full scholarship, and that's mostly what I wrote my main college essay about. However, the essay is a bit unconventional and vague-ish about the specifics.

Now I have to write the 1000 character short essay about an extracurricular activity I've done, and while everyone says I should write about my foreign exchange, I feel like I would sound like a broken record by doing so. Instead I was thinking about writing about being on the school newspaper.

I guess I'm just asking for some advice. Do I write a more specific and "conventional" short essay about my exchange year, or do I write about journalism to show some diversity in my ECs?

Definitely do not write the same topic as your main essay. Admissions is trying to know as much about you as possible. Show as many possible sides about you as possible. Good luck! :)
